In 1830, George Washington Carver came to live in nearby Ottawa County and opened a farm called Carver's Corners which became one of America's leading corn producers. For many years thereafter it furnished much of the whiskey consumed by Americans across the country. When Andrew Jackson was elected president in 1800, he decided to move westward into what would become Missouri Territory after defeating France in a battle at Yorktown Heights near Paris Creek; this area lay within modern Bourbonnais Township when it was organized as McLean County under territorial jurisdiction on November 15th, 1818. In 1836 James Kapp purchased 1/4 acre (0.24 ha) northwest of present-day downtown Bourbonnais from Ezekiel Carver for $1½ per hundredweight ($ today). At this time there were only five families living within its boundaries - all farmers - with about seventy seven employees operating sixteen farms yielding an annual output of ninety bushels (or 468 kg)of corn or beans worth $14 per tonne ($ then). After years of growth due to agricultural production and development over less than two decades Kapp sold his interest in 1865 to A.E Posthumus who operated it until 1912 when it passed into ownership by Wm Hickey & Sons Ltd.. That company continued operations until 1959 when it merged with other related concerns forming Diageo USA Incorporated.. The distillery produced some sixty thousand barrels of bourbon annually until its closure in 1968; this made it one of the largest U.S. alcohol producers at that time The present day community began developing around what is now Lafayette Boulevard in earnest when two Irishmen named McNally purchased land there in 1907 and built several homes including Carrigan's Tavern which still stands today while another tavern called White Sands took over operation from Carrigan's soon after its construction This early development has been credited with helping to create what is considered today one of America's most picturesque villages with easy access to everything without leaving town center It wasn't until 1925 when Louis Piquet opened his grocery store on Main Street that things really started happening he became one of the key forces behind Bourbonnais' growth into an active commercial center with numerous retail businesses now existing across both Lafayette Boulevard and Church Avenue
