Bourbonnais, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. The name "Bourbonnais" comes from the French word "bourg," meaning village or settlement. The Bourbons were a noble family that lived in Bourbonnais during the 18th century. They were prominent landowners and politicians in the area. The first settlers to Bourbonnais arrived in 1812. They were farmers who had come from Earth City, Michigan. By 1815, they had built a small cabin on the same site where they now live. Over time, other families moved into this small village and it grew larger than just their own families. In 1830, Lafayette College was founded in Bourbonnais and many of its students came to live there after enrolling at nearby Ripon College. By 1840, there were over 200 residents living in what is now Bourbonnais Village(). During the American Civil War, much of bourbonnais was destroyed by Union artillery fire and subsequent firesfighting efforts.. Most of these buildings still standing are from this time period including the courthouse which burned down on July 6th 1865 while being used as an hospital for Confederate wounded soldiers; and both banks of high-water crossings which remain today as well as several homes dating back to when this area was part of Orleans Parish In 1920, Cadillac Motor Company opened a plant called "Cadillac Assembly Plant". This plant manufactured luxury automobiles such as Cadillacs and Sebring coupes at what is now known as I- Highway 17 south of town (). This facility employed up to 4500 people during its heyday (1924 - 1957). After Cadillac's departure from the area there was significant decline until 1995 when a new auto manufacturing complex called "Boulevard Automotive" became operational adjacent to Boulevard Park (a golf course) off I-Highway 17 near present day University Avenue (). The new factory produced various types of cars such as SUVs and pickups with production continuing until 2008 when it closed due to economic conditions within Canada (). In 2009 Cadillac announced that their old plant would be reopened under different ownership and naming rights but no further information has been released about what will be done with it
