Bourbonnais was founded in 1851 by General James K. Polk and his family as a small community on the banks of the Chicago River near what is now Harrison Park. Bourbonnais was founded in 1836 by James Bourg and his brother, Pierre, who were both natives of the village of Joinville, France. The brothers started a small farm with four acres of land where they grew corn and beans. In 1841, James Bourg married Anna Maria Kieffer, from a family of farmers in this area. They raised their children here and began to sell their crops at auction to support their growing family. In 1848, they formed a partnership with John Waddell and bought an additional acre of land for $5 per acre. This allowed them to develop their business into what it is today: a large grocery store and grain elevator that distribute flour, oats, rice, hay and other agricultural products throughout the region. In 1860, two years after Bourbonnais became a town limits within Illinois Territory (it had been granted status as a city on April 14th of that year), its first mayor was elected: George Purdy. As the town continued to grow during the late 19th century it developed several banking institutions including the Bank of Bourbonnais which opened in 1865; The First National Bank in 1868; and The Second National Bank in 1889. These banks helped create one of the most important economic engines behind Bourbonnais' growth during this time period – its industry based economy which relied heavily on farming production as well as heavy trade with nearby cities like Chicago and St Louis. During World War I (1914-18), many residents served in military units or worked downtown businesses such as J&R Block & Co., Coca Cola Bottling Works (later renamed Pepsi-Cola Company) or The Masonic Temple before returning home to rebuild society afterwards. Many also took up professions such as dentists or lawyers after returning home – these people are often considered "the first wave"of Bourbonnaisians when it comes to professional life within the community post-war period
