Bolingbrook, Illinois was founded in 1872 by John Boling and William Weldon. The town’s original name was Prospect Heights. In 1916, the United States War Department designated Bolingbrook as a Red Dot Sight Station. This station furnished sight targets to American troops during World War I. In 1932, the United States Congress created the National Rifle Association (NRA) in order to promote gun safety and education. The NRA donated $10,000 to Bolingbrook’s first election campaign. In 1934, the mayor of Bolingbrook established the city hall as a shooting range for local residents and visitors. In 1924, Bolingbrook became one of two villages in Cook County to be merged into the city of Chicago. Bolingbrook's rich history began with its founding date February 14th, 1868 when George Washington Bolling moved from New York City with his family to found a new home on the banks of the Chicago River in what is now Bolingbrook Township - then an Agricultural District. At that time there were only six homes and thirty-eight residents living within sight of each other on Milwaukee Avenue between Randolph Street and State Street - but this little village would grow rapidly over ensuing years into one of Chicagos most important communities - thanks to its close proximity to downtown along with ample riverfront property for fishing and hunting opportunities which led to its nickname "The Hunting Ground". In 1924 when both villages were merged intoChicago – as per local ordinance – Bolingbrook quickly became one of Chicagos largest industrial suburbs thanks to its strong manufacturing base associated with General Foods (now Kraft Heinz), American Can Company (later Alcoa), Wernicke & Kapplin Paper Mill ( precursor to Peet’s Coffee ), Ford Motor Company’s Dearborn Truck Factory (later Prentice Electric) as well as many other major companies throughout its growing suburban district including Armour Manufacturing Company which built America’s first all-steel automobile factory outside Detroit – just minutes away from where today’s Northwestern University campus stands! Today it still retains much of its agricultural past due to land holdings by fellow suburbia neighbour McCormick Place Shopping Center who own approximately 6 square miles encompassing nearly all present day Boling Brook Township & parts adjacent thereto containing 1,500 acres comprising hundreds if not thousands more farms dating back centuries…the old McCormick Place site offers approximately 800 acres total fenced off & openland forested acres ideal for hunting or bird watching etc., making it still one of Chicagos most popular tourist destinations!
