Bolingbrook is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, located on the north side of Chicago. The population was 21,822 as of the 2010 census. Bolling and his brother-in-law Julius Rosenwald and became an important seed center for optics production in the early 20th century. In 1932, American Optical Corporation was founded here by Edwin Armstrong and Clifford Berryman. Bolingbrook's rich optical history began with the opening of Bolingbrook Optical in 1892. At that time, the city was home to only a few opticians and this small business served as a nucleus for what would eventually become Bolingbrook Optical Corporation. In 1912, the company opened its first store in downtown Bolingbrook. The store continued to grow and by 1938, it had outgrown its original space and moved into a new building on West Wisconsin Avenue. The company continued to grow and by 1950, it had completed construction of its second store on South Dearborn Street in Bolingbrook. During these years, Bolingbrook Optical Corporation became one of the largest optical businesses in Illinois. In 1972, the company merged with another large Illinois optical business, O'Brien & Sons Incorporated. This merger resulted in the formation of what is now known as Bolingbrook Optical Company LLC. Over the years, many key individuals have played important roles atbolingbrokoponycorp. These include president Edwin Wojciechowski; vice president John Ahern; treasurer Roy Bourgeois; secretary/treasurer Stanley Pritzker; assistant treasurer James Fenton; controller Dennis Flynn; president’s representative / accounting firm representative Dan Gallagher (later succeeded by Michael Gallagher); and director of marketing Dean Halsey (later succeeded by John Healey). Bolingbrook, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. As of the 2010 census, Bolingbrook had a population of 97,719. It is the third-largest city in Chicago after Chicago and Chicago Heights. The name "Bolingbrook" was first given to this community by Horace Niles Bolingbroke who purchased land here in 1836. The original town site was located on the north side of the current Bolingbrook village and included what is now part of downtown Bolingbrook as well as much of present-day Midtown. The first post office opened in 1837. In 1870, a railroad station was built here and became an important center for trade with other eastern communities such as Pittsfield and Buffalo Grove. With its rapid growth during the early 20th century, Bolingbrook began to annex more areas east of Lake Michigan including parts of today's West Central Side and Northwest Side neighborhoods. By 1930, it had reached its peak population with over 150 businesses and 300 residents living in close proximity to one another on State Street between Wabash Avenue and Cicero Avenue (now Lombard Avenue). However, following the Great Depression that impacted nearly all U.S. communities,[1] Bolingbrook experienced significant decreases in population throughout the 1940s until reaching its lowest point at 80,000 residents by 1970.[2] Although there have been occasional surges up to around 120,000 residents since then,[3] overall growth has slowed significantly since 2000 due to several factors including increasing suburbanization[4][5][6][7] as well as plans by local officials to focus on Economic Development instead of Population Growth.[8][9] Despite these limitations – which include smaller annexation rates across different wards[10][11] – Bolingbroke remains an important community due to its rich history dating back multiple centuries; strong social fabric; wide variety of cultural attractions; diverse architecture; vibrant media industry; active public transportation system; top quality schools; and easy access into Downtown Chicago from many corners around town[12].
