A fire destroyed most of the buildings on Main Street between Spring Street and Prospect Avenue on November 14th, 1865; however, Mrs. Payson's school continued to operate until 1870 under new management with help from her son Ezra Payson III who also taught there until 1880 .A new courthouse was built on State Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue (now called Washington Boulevard) in 1872 which served as the town hall until 1909 .In 1898, the Chicago & North Western Railroad came to Bolingbrook with plans to build a branch line into Joliet that would have cut through downtown Bolingbrook but this project never got off the ground because of financial problems .In 1907, Mayor John Haggerty ordered all streetlights be turned off at night so that Bolingbrook could get aneuclidex for its streets during prohibition while still being able to receive mail The local paper company closed its doors around 1920 due to economic troubles while other businesses such as grocery stores flourished during these years Some famous residents or natives include Ezra Payson III who ran Wabash Chemical Company from 1919–1929; Harry Slaughter who operated Slaughter's Department Store from 1923–1927; George Daley who represented Illinois at United States Congress from 1933–1935; Art Kappan who operated Kappan's Drugstore since 1906 which remain open today as Kappan's Pharmacy; Dorothy Day whose work helped start America's civil rights movement; Gertrude Stein whose books were published here including "East Side Story" which became a movie released here in 1957
