Bolingbrook is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,713 at the 2010 census. Bolingbrook is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It was named after George Bolingbroke, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke and his wife Henrietta Maria Ponsonby (née Marchioness of Rosseau). The first settler in what is now Bolingbrook was Joshua Frye who built a cabin on the site in 1817. The town's first post office was established in 1824 and its first mayor was James Mennon. In 1829, John Wessel arrived from Prussia with his family and set up camp near what is now the junction of State Road 508 and Cicero Avenue. He began to grow corn and soybeans on his farm which he named Wesselsville after himself and his son John Wessel Jr., both natives of Prussia. By 1830, Wessel had four hundred acres (1 km²) of land farmland, seventy-six hogsheads (2 barrels) of oilseed whisky, two opera houses and twelve sawmills all running by steam power; he also raised chickens, pigs and cattle on this property until 1840 when he retired to live at home with his only daughter Electa Winters while her husband worked for a paper mill one mile east of where they resided. In 1835 Henry Ford moved from Dearborn Heights to Price Township in Price County because he could not find enough work as a carpenter in Michigan due to the Panic OF1837 that followed the American Civil War; Ford started building Model T cars there until production stopped due to lack of wood during World War II. After that event many people left for other parts of Illinois including Bolingbrook where there were no jobs available so much so that by 1945 almost all residents had left except for about 20 men who were living off government subsistence rations including 3 white men who ran a grocery store called "The Fords" along State Road 508 between Byrnes Road/State Highway 431/Upton Road which still exists today as an old house used as storage units known locally as "The Ford House." Bolingbrook became an incorporated village in 1907 following approval by the state legislature but internal strife led to its dissolution nine years later when most residents chose not to incorporation while others joined nearby Villa Park establishing that village's charter dated back to 1909 In 1932 Ethel Smith married Samuel Hodge who lived next door at 317 S First Ave until their death less than five years later leaving behind six daughters ranging in ages from infanthood through teenage pregnancy before she died aged ninety-seven having never married again In 1984 Eldridge Drive was added onto what had been Sam Hodge Drive name given to it by their daughter Marilyn Jaffe after her mother's death During World War II over 2 million tons (1 ton = 22 kg)Of aluminum were produced here producing around 100%of America's aluminum output making it possible for local businesses such as Alcoa Incorporated whereby Sam Hodge company got its start . Today many small businesses are still active such as Thalmic Labs whose products are distributed throughout North America
Bolingbrook was first settled in 1834 by Enoch Pratt. In 1852, it became the location of the Bolingbrook Arsenal, a munitions manufacturing facility. The plant closed in 1922 and its remains were demolished in 1951.
