The history of firearms in Bolingbrook, Illinois dates back to at least 1857. That year, a group of farmers in the town founded the first gunsmith shop in the area. The shop was located on Church Street and operated by John P. Winchester. The business continued to be run until it was destroyed by a fire in 1892. In 1861, Bolingbrook became an official township of McLean County. At that time, there were only 12 residents living in the township. In 1865, however, Bolingbrook incorporated as a city and began to grow rapidly. By 1870, there were over 100 people living in the city and it had become one of the most important economic hubs in McLean County. Throughout its history, Bolingbrook has been home to some of the most famous firearms manufacturers in America. Among these companies are Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester), Colt Firearms Corporation (Colt), and Remington Arms Company (Remington). Many of these companies have their roots within Bolingbrook itself- such as Winchester’s original factory on State Street where rifles and shotguns were manufactured from 1857-1865; Colt’s original manufacturing plant on Elm Drive where handguns were made from 1876-1902; and Remington’s original factory on Main Street where rifle barrels were forged from 1903-1907
