The town's nickname "The Apple City" may be traced to its role as one of two original sites for apple production in Kane County -the other being Pekin -after which many local businesses continue to trade under that name today. Manufacturing played no small role either: early users included Mennonite settlers who operated a flour mill and others who built automobile factories around Joliet and Elgin between 1920 and 1930; later residents produced bread, cigarettes, beer, cheese, applesauce and other goods at local foundries before moving into more modern subdivisions such as Brentwood Park and Elmhurst Mall. Today's economy is dominated by education: Bolingbrook has two high schools -Prairie View A&M University-and three locally affiliated colleges/universities: Northwestern Illinois University- Carbondale (ILU), Northern Illinois University- DeKalb (NIU) and Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC). On November 8th 1830 Joliet Township also became a part of Cook County and remained so until it merged into Bolingbrook on February 14th 1934. The first settler in what would become Bolingbrook was Nicholas Bolton who arrived on July 7th 1800 from London with his family and he donated land to start a new village called Bolton Village which would later be renamed after himself - Bolton Park . He also donated $2,000 to help finance construction of the first roads through the town limits
