The first settler in Bolingbrook was Nicholas Hiebert who arrived in 1824. He named his land "Hometown" after his childhood home of Halstedville, Ontario. In 1835, he and his wife Anna founded a small village on the east side of Bolingbrook Lake near present day Appleton Avenue and Cicero Road. They named their community "Bolingbrook". The first store opened in this village on October 10, 1835 by Nicholas Hiebert and Elisha Cook. In 1840s an increase of settlers led to the establishment of other villages within Bolingbrook Township: Brighton (1841), North Aurora (1842), South Burlington (1845), Watertown (1846), Sheffield Heights (1849), Lansingburgh (1851) and Thiensburg (1854). All these villages were located on or near what is now Appleton Avenue and Cicero Road within today's Bolingbrook Township limits. During the American Civil War,boling Brook residents served in various units including Company K 11th Regiment Illinois Infantry from 1861-65; 1st Battalion Illinois Volunteer Cavalry 1861-65; 2nd Battalion Illinois Volunteer Cavalry 1865-68; 3rd Battalion Illinois Volunteer Cavalry 1968-69; 4th Battalion Illinois Volunteer Infantry 1969-72. After the war many residents began to moving away from rural towns into larger cities such as Chicago for economic reasons during World War II when production increased for military hardware such as tanks, planes and warships across all industries due to wartime demand which impacted rural areas unable to participate due to lack of resources such as skilled labor or materials necessary for manufacturing munitions during wartime times
Bolingbrook is a village in Bolingbrook Township, Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Bolingbrook community began as two hamlets – Mayfair and Brookfield – on the right bank of the Dan Ryan Expressway north of downtown Chicago. The communities were annexed by Bolingbrook in 1959. Bolingbrook was founded in 1892 by Leland Stanford Jr., son of American explorer and railroad magnate Leland Stanford Sr.. The original home of Mr. Stanford's family was built on a site that now houses the Bolingbrook Library. In 1924, a local paper mill closed and left an impact on the community which saw an increase in population from its previoustie to small businesses in what is now known as "the mills district." In 1975, Volkmar Mayer opened his first Upscale supermarket at 156 N Dearborn Street which quickly became one of Bolingbrook's most popular stores; it remains open today.
