Gun chokes have a long and varied history, dating back to the early days of firearms. They were initially used as muzzle devices, which caused the air pressure outside the gun to become too high for the firearm to fire accurately. As rifle barrels grew in size, so too did the number of rounds that could be fired from them, and consequently, the need for better means of restraining firearms. One such device was a gun choke. Choke devices consisted of a metal band or piece of cloth that was wrapped around either one or both ends of a rifle barrel. In addition to rifles, choke devices were also used on shotguns, handguns, water pistols and even bows. The first known gun choke is thought to date back to 1795 when Frenchman Pierre-Simon Laplace designed an improvement on an earlier muzzle brake design named the Théorie de la Vibration (the theory of vibration). The théorie de la vibration allowed guns with larger calibers – such as those used by cannonadeurs – to fire more rounds per minute without overloading their barrels. Chokedevices became common in Europe after 1805 when Napoleonic Wars began. During World War II many countries developed handgun chokes specifically designed for use with Japanese Type 88 cannons which were firing armour-piercing shells that posed a significant threat to Allied forces fighting in North Africa and Europe during World War II. Gun chokes remained popular into the 1950s but fell out of favour following advances in technology including automatic weapons and machineguns

In 1948, Bolingbrook became a city under Mayor Rufus King's leadership after he won an election against incumbent Mayor John Wickersham with more than 60% of the vote. In 1978, Bolingbrook annexed part of Moreland Township to form another large city; this annexation also caused some controversies because it violated township boundaries set before that time
