McConnell's son David built a log cabin on his family's farmstead near present-day Park Ridge Road and Old Highway 11 about two miles east of the current town center. In 1835, farmers Isaac Key and Samuel Newmark purchased McConnell's land and began to build homes there. The first house built in what is now Bolingbrook was erected by Newmark on July 10,1836. By 1840, about 20 families had settled in Bolingbrook and it had become an agricultural community with several mills powering its economy. During the 1840s, local farmers developed a strong interest in politics due to their close proximity to Chicago government buildings and political lobbying became popular among residents hereabouts. One such resident was Judge Nathan Hubbard (1796-1869), who played an important role during the early years of American democracy before moving westward into politics full time at age 36 under President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865).
