It is one of the most ethnically diverse towns in the United States. The town was founded in 1847 by James Boling and his wife Eliza Bennett. Bolingbrook is located in west-central Cook County on the site of what was once a small Native American village known as Winnetka. Bolingbrook's first settler, James Boling, arrived from New Hampshire in 1847 and built a log cabin on what would become his family's farmstead. In 1850, he married Eliza Bennett; they had four children before she died in 1872. After her death, James and his son Charles started an orchard and raised hogs near their home until 1865 when they began to sell applesauce to customers along Elm Street (now Touhy Avenue). In 1870, they bought land adjoining present-day Addison Road for $30 per acre and began to build a house there; it opened as their home later that year. In 1874, James Boling Jr., Charles' father, purchasedadditional land east of their original property for use as a shopping center and community garden; this park now includes Addison Road north of Interstate 90A (now US 75), just south of Geneva Avenue (now US 6). By 1886, all but two acres of Jim's new land were developed into housing developments: The Ridgefield Estates neighborhood on Addison Road to the south and Park Row neighborhoods on Geneva Avenue to the north (the last development being razed in 1998).
