In 1854, he founded the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad which connected Chicago with Joliet and other eastern cities. This led to growth in Bolingbrook as businesses opened up and people moved into the area. Bolingbrook also played an important role in helping create America's first political party – the Republican Party – during its early years. In 1861, he helped start the National Republicans organization in order to help promote western interests within America's nascent government. Throughout his life, he remained an advocate for responsible governance and good public policy; this was evident throughout his community activity both before and after his death in 1912. Today, Bolingbrook remains an active community member who continues to make a positive impact on its residents

Bolingbrook is a city in the northern Illinois town of Skokie, on the border of Cook County and Will County. The population was 509 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bolingbrook was first settled in 1837 by Levi Coffin and his family, who named it after Bolingbroke, England. The name has been used continuously since then, most notably for Bolingbrook Township which was established in 1867. The City of Bolingbrook was organized on April 20, 1871 from a small portion of Skokie Township. At that time there were only 10 residents in what would become Bolingbrook Township. On December 5, 1889, all but 2 of the township's residents voted to form a new city including those living in rural areas east of Joliet Road (then I-90). On January 1, 1907 all but 4 residents voted to keep their village status quo with just one vote against incorporation into the city limits (the last vote occurred on November 8th). In 1909 when the City limit was increased to 30 blocks it became necessary for an election to be held to determine whether or not all citizens within that limit should have voting rights as well – this election resulted in 3 citizens being elected to office within 30 blocks: Mayor Emanuel; Alderman John Noble; and Treasurer Abraham Langerhans. On October 15th, 1916 during World War I munitions workers went on strike at Waukegan Arsenal over paychecks totaling $1 per week instead of their promised $2 weekly wage plus benefits like medical care and vacation days which they had been promised by management prior to mobilization. After weekslong negotiations between management and striking workers both sides agreed to back down before violence erupted between police officers and strikers outside the plant gates – this event inaugurated what would become known as "The Great Chicago fire" which destroyed 146 buildings out of a total damage estimate Of 244! In 1933 riots took place following passage of a state anti-lynching law championed by Governor John Midgley – these riots eventually led to Midgley's impeachment proceedings that ended with his resignation less than two months later amidst public outcry over his role in inciting rioters
