Blue Island is a small town located in the northwest corner of Illinois. The population was 7,814 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Blue Island is known for its seafood and lake activities. The first European to visit Blue Island was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it after Punta Cana on the island of Hispaniola, where he had been shipwrecked four years earlier. In 1818, John McLaughlin purchased land at the mouth of River Des Plaines and founded McLaughlin City, which became Blue Island in 1821 when he donated land to improve water access for his new city. The first post office opened in Blue Island on October 12, 1865. The name came from the color blue - one possible explanation being that blue dye could be used to make flags at that time - and was called "New London". The present day Post Office building was built in 1903-1904 by Cushman & Wakefield Architects with architectship credit given to Edward Hennepin & Sons Incorporated (now USHBE). In 1956, Illinois General Assembly passed House Bill 527 which allowed municipalities within Cook County to establish their own fire departments without having to agree with county officials; this law led to the creation of Green Township #1 (later renamed White Settlement) on May 10, 1957 and then Blue Island Township #2 on July 1st following similar legislation by neighboring townships. It wasn't until 1959 when both townships were merged into one body - becoming what is now known as Blue Island Township #1 - due to local demand for better services combined with efforts by township officials and Cook County officials working together under a joint oversight framework designed specifically for township government development.

Blue Island is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois. It is located on the east side of the river Sangamon, between Moline and Belleville. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit Blue Island were Jesuit missionaries from France in 1763. They named it after a blue light that they saw shining from a hill in the distance. The first permanent settler in Blue Island was James Caldwell who arrived in 1812. He built a cabin on the bank of the river and began to grow crops. Other early settlers included John Nichols and his family, who came around 1834; Daniel Andrusen with his sons Carl and John, who came around 1840; George Hodge with his family, who arrived around 1847; Thomas Sleeper with his family, who arrived around 1850; and Augustus Kelley with his family, who arrived around 1857. The first school was organized in 1829 by Reverend William Caldwell as part of an effort to provide education for frontier farmers. In 1861, when Blue Island became part of the new county of Sangamonville, Schools #1-4 were added to serve blue islanders as well as Belleville residents across the river south of town limits (including Moline). In 1912–1913 local physician Drs Samuel Jaffe (1861-1935) and August Busch (1865-1951) served as teachers at schools #1-4 before moving on to become principals at high school there until their retirement in 1933). During World War II many members of Blue Island's military families lived here including Major General Curtis LeMay's wife Patricia from 1943-1945; Captain Harry Kimball from 1945-1950 continuing until he retired two years later after serving five terms as superintendent; Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Sibley Jr.'s wife Elaine from 1954-1958 continuing until she died two years later also continuing until then until he retired four years later becoming Superintendent Emeritus status effective November 9th 1959). After World War II many farms were sold off and most residents moved away or left for other rural communities such as Rockford or Urbana where they grew crops or raised chickens or pigs while some continued to live hereabouts doing some form of agriculture into their nineties sometimes up through their sixties if not older including one man still farming today! One common feature among these earlier settlers was their use of hoes to cultivate land which helped shape much of what has been done here since then such that field crops have now become dominant over pastures/forestry although various forms of livestock raising continue throughout much parts both rural and urban areas! Some interesting aspects about this history are that one third (or more) Of all businesses listed in township records dating back more than ten years are either agricultural related or services such as general store keepers - another indication that this community has played an important role within its boundaries ever since its inception! Today there are several businesses active within Bluelinehills Shopping Center adjacent thereto including: Pohl’s Pharmacy & Hardware (since 1984), Aldi Supermarket & Grocery Store (since 1997), Arby’s restaurant & bar (now closed), Verizon Wireless company store - previously Radio Shack - opened its doors on October 12th 2014., Dunkin’ Donuts coffee shop opened its doors on October 12th 2014., convenience store Debra's opens its Doors November 6th2014., 4G LTE service begins operations February 2nd 2015 thru March 26th 2015
The first white settlers in Blue Island, Illinois were Captain John Jacob Astor and his family. They located the island in 1833 and started a small farm. The Astors were the first to build a house on the island. In 1834, they added a barn and some other buildings. In 1840, Captain Astor's wife gave birth to their only child, Walter Henry Astor.
