The town was founded by U.S. Senator Daniel Boone on the site of what is now Blue Island in 1812 as a stop on his ill-fated journey from Kentucky to Springfield, Illinois. The original town site was 4square miles (10 km²). It declined after railroad construction bypassed it and other towns along the southern branch of the former Lake Michigan Shore Line in favor of villages near Chicago; Blue Island had a population of 1,200 in 1900 and only 350 in 1960. However, this decline has been reversed since 2000 when development has returned to the area and new businesses have opened up including two breweries and two restaurants that serve farm-to-table food options as well as national brands such as Dunkin' Donuts and Papa John's Pizza. According to the 2010 census, Blue Island has a total population of 7,451 people: 6,965 men and 1,058 women. The racial makeup is 98% white (non-Hispanic), 2% black or African American, 0% Native American/Alaska Native, 1% Asian/Pacific Islander, 0% multiracial/multiethnicity—including 2% who are Hispanic or Latino—and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents make up 3%, or about 10 people out of 7451 total inhabitants; they are concentrated in Southside (northwest corner) village which has been majority Hispanic for many years
