Blue Island is a small town located in the eastern part of Illinois. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a reputation as one of the most diverse small towns in Illinois. The town was founded in 1835 by General David Dixon and his wife Elizabeth. The name "Blue Island" comes from the blue dye that was used to make fabrics blue. The first post office opened in Blue Island on July 15, 1836. At the time, it was one of only a few towns in Illinois with its own government. The main industry in Blue Island until recently has been agriculture, but this is changing as more people are moving into the area for jobs and education. There are now several high-tech companies based in Blue Island, including two that were founded here: Motorola Solutions and Intel Corporation. Blue Island is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,763 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was founded in 1852 by farmers from New Albany, Indiana who came to the area to look for land to farm after being driven out of their original home by Native Americans. In 1859, John Ireland bought what is now Blue Island from the Canadian lumber company and renamed it after his birthplace on Irelands family's Irish farm near Killeen, Texas. The first school on Blue Island was organized in 1857 as an academy under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church with a class size of 12 students. A second school opened in 1861 and served as a day-school until 1865 when it became a high school. In 1875, Daniel Hargrave donated land for a town hall and library which were dedicated in 1876; they are still standing today within walking distance of each other. In 1889, blue island had 5 stores and 2 blacksmiths while its population numbered just 350 residents (the current population stands at 1,763). In 1901, over 100 businesses joined forces to form "The Five Towns Company" which successfully lobbied for state legislation giving them self-governance; this would later be formalized into the Village Charter that year By 1905 there were 10 businesses with a total payroll of $10K ($1M in 2017) making Blue Island one of America's most prosperous villages with only one problem: lack of farmland In 1912 Illinois enacted Prohibition which caused many small businessesadraught liquor instead then selling it In 1921 William Fenton leased 8 acres from Captain James Caldwell for use as an airport but this project never got off the ground
Blue Island, Illinois was founded in 1847 by John P. Campbell and his wife Ann. The area that is now Blue Island was first inhabited by the Potawatomi people. The area was claimed by the United States in 1818 when President James K. Polk sent a military force to burn down the Potawatomi village of Kaskaskia on the Great Lakes after discovering that they were trading with France. In 1846, Campbell purchased land from the Potawatomi and started to build a farmstead on what is now Blue Island. The farmstead would serve as the home for Campbell until his death in 1901. During World War II, Blue Island played an important role in the defense of Chicago because it was one of two villages within close proximity toChicago that did not have any military installations. After the war, Blue Island became part of Cook County and experienced rapid growth due to its location within easy reach of both Chicago and other major cities. Today, Blue Island remains a vibrant community with active businesses and cultural attractions.
