In 1827, a group of farmers in the town of Blue Island, Illinois set out to build a new home. The farmer named John L. Hull had the idea to build a cabin on an island in the stream that flowed through their farmstead. They named the island Blue Island because of the blue sky that could be seen from it. The first house was built on Blue Island in 1830 and was called "Hull's Cabin." The Hulls were successful farmers and they started selling products from their farmstead including flour, milk, butter, eggs, sugar, and vegetables. In 1836, they bought another farm nearby and moved their entire family to this new location. They continued to grow crops and sell products until 1886 when they went into bankruptcy due to high costs of inputs needed for their agricultural production such as land., machinery., fertilizer., etc.. In 1932 the Hull family donated all of their assets (assets not including land) to establish two schools in Blue Island: one for children up to age 16 and one for adults up to age 65 years old. These schools remain open today - serving as sources of educational opportunities for people from all walks of life in our community!

Blue Island, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 581 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name Blue Island comes from the blue water that flows through it and surrounds it. The first settlers in Blue Island were Abram and Eleanor Cook who arrived in 1838. They built a log cabin on what is now Indian Hill Road. Abram Cook died in 1839, but his wife Eleanor kept the cabin and developed it into a farmstead with six children- three girls and three boys- Isaac, Mose, Salmon, Harry and William: they named their farm "Cook's settlement". In 1847 the brothers Amos (Amos junior) Singer (1820-1893), Solomon Singer (1825-1911), John Pritzker (1827-1912)and Abraham Kapp manufactured pianos at their house on North Avenue for sale to passengers travelling on boatboats going up the Chicago River to Lake Michigan; these pianos are still played today by people living near Cook's Settlement as well as by students at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Business Administration’s Orchestra Practice Hall located across from Cook’s Settlement on First Street." After Amos Junior passed away in 1893 his brother Solomon took over running the farmstead which continued until 1911 when Solomon Jr., also died leaving four children: Morris Harris Singer (b. 1886), Eva Fenton Singer (b. 1888), Milton Slingerland Singer Jr.(b.? 1889) and Max Bornstein Singer(b.? 1890). In 1924 Milton formed an partnership with Adolf Grosse & Sons Piano Manufacturing Company which lasted until 1957 when Milton sold out to Adolph Grosse's son Emerson Grosse who ran it until 1990 when it closed down again due to economic reasons. The piano manufacturing company produced over 100 different types of guitars including many famous ones like Gibson Guitars which were made there such as Les Paul Custom models designed by then owner/manager George Martin Luther King Jr., etc...Adolf Grosse had owned the business since 1914.) Milton Slingerland Sr.'s father founded Slingerland Music Corporation in 1927 which became one of America's leading audio manufacturers before folding in 1991 . The post office was established at Blue Island on July 7th, 1850 by citizens Jacob Hocker and Catharine Morse; two years later this post office was moved to its present location west of town off Illinois 29th Street just south of Sugar Land Road (). On November 16th 1861 postmaster Averill Sellers reported that “the mail arrives safe every week but we have not been able to get through because our hands are full with other Correspondence” (). On July 10th 1862 postmaster Wm Brownell wrote that “our Dear Postmistress has gone back East very soon after taking possession of her new Office situated within easy reach where she will be more likely to receive your letters promptly than outside where no officer or person can visit you frequently [sic] […] We regret very much that Mrs Brownell cannot stay longer here but we hope she will soon return home again” (). By 1865 both posts had been discontinued so another store was erected about 20 feet north east corner Main St./3rd Ave (+ old courthouse building). This store continued operation until 1870 when construction began on what would become State Capitol Building (); this building too ceased operations around 1870 due largely to financial difficulties brought about by excessive growth within McLean County (). At some point between 1863-65 there may have been an addition or renovation (+ access road) added onto existing schoolhouse Block 3 (= current high school]. This addition appears not existent any longer however remnants can still be found next door + original entrance drive ). From 1870-'75 only male residents could vote hence "Blue island" signified primarily exclusively male residency-. In 1945 Addison Sawyer became town clerk giving women voting rights for first time ever In 1946 Greenfield Township merged into McLean County making Blue Island part of newly formed township!!
Blue Island was first settled in 1847 by the Ryan family. The town was named for the color of their boatbuilding river dockage. The town's first school was built in 1848, and its first post office was opened in 1850. In 1861, Blue Island became a village, and in 1865 it became a city. On January 1, 1969, Blue Island became a part of the larger City of Chicago.
