In 1887, John R. Seaton founded the Optical Instrument Company in Blue Island, Illinois, which became one of the largest optical manufacturers in the United States. Blue Island, Illinois is a town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 8,402 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was named for the blue color of the sky over it. The first settlers in Blue Island were Native Americans who lived there before they moved to what is now Kane County and founded this townsite in 1836. The first settler on Blue Island was Solomon George Washington who built a log cabin on what is now US Highway 63. George Washington also raised chickens and pigs on his farmstead which he sold to early settlers for meat and eggs. In 1841, Reverend Isaac Asbury preached his famous sermon titled "A New Society" from a cabin on Green Lakeside Road near present day Cass Avenue in Blue Island during an event known as the Great Revival which aimed to open up new opportunities for American Indians living east of the Mississippi River (the region then known as Northwest Indiana). This sermon led to large numbers of Indian people coming to live in Kane County because ofAsbury's preaching campaign which helped spur economic development among these groups. By 1861, when Blue Island had a population of about 125 residents, most residents were farmers or mechanics working on farms along with their families that ranged from 2-4 children per family due to poverty and lack of access to education or other forms of social assistance at that time. By 1870, when Blue Island boasted a population of 468 residents including 114 farmers with an average household sizeof 3½ persons, it had become one of the most isolated communities within Kane County due largely to its remote location and lack of transportation options beyond walking or horseback riding distant into neighboring towns like West Dundee or Aurora. However by 1880s some progress had been made with gradual installation OFW lines throughout much rural Kane County resulting in increased trade and industry between different parts of the county while still remaining quite isolated by comparison; this helped give rise to some local legends such as "The 5 Amish", which describes how small businesses have flourished despite being surrounded by bigger companies thanks primarily toarteries running through nearby towns like Carbondale that do not charge fees for service called 'pumping'. In 1886 entrepreneur Cyrus Vance established Vance's millinery store complex just north/east off US Highway 6 southbound just outside old village boundaries now part Of Old Village nickname 'Vanceville'. Blue Island was founded in 1879 by John and Anna Blue. The Blue family ran a small grocery store on the island until they sold it to H.B. Dixon in 1903. Dixon's heirs operated the business until 1949 when it was bought by the town of Blue Island, Illinois. The town renamed the store "Dixon's" and continued to operate it until 1984 when it closed its doors for good. Today, the building is still standing and is used as a museum by the town of Blue Island. The island was originally named Wabash after General Anthony Wayne who had fought against British forces during the American Revolution. In 1881, local residents voted to change the name to Blue Island in honor of John Blue, one of their founding fathers. The island also became home to some of Illinois' earliest agricultural settlers including J.H Barber who erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street in 1886 and Fenton Shearer who built a farmstead on what is now North Main Street in 1889. The first stores on Blue Island were started by John and Anna Blue with their grocery store being open from 1879-1883 before selling it to H B Dixon. The Blue Island area was first settled by the Potawatomi in the 17th century. In 1801, the United States acquired what is now Illinois from Spain as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The area became a part of the United States in 1818 and was named for St. Louis, Missouri. The population of Blue Island grew rapidly during the 19th century due to railroads and other development around the town. The town officially adopted its current name on July 2, 1893.
