The first white settlers in Blue Island were Gottfried and Wilhelm Kapp from Hamburg, Germany in 1814. They arrived on a boat called "Vacation" and started a farm. The Kapps left their farm and moved to what is now Blue Island on December 3, 1814. Gottfried's grandson Johann Friedrich Kapp founded the First German Baptist Church on October 15, 1846 at what is now 4th Street and South Avenue in Blue Island. He also donated land for a public school which was opened on September 9th, 1850 by Rev. Drury & Mrs. Haggerty with $2 per pupil tuition free for families of six or more children who could attend school for moral instruction only! In 1852 Reverend Drury became pastor of First Evangelical Lutheran Church (now Trinity United Methodist). Reverend Drury was succeeded by Rev. Auerbach in 1870; after which time there has been no real change in pastor until present day when Drury serves as an emeritus priest at St John’s Episcopal church on North Avenue in Blue Island- he has also been involved with many community organizations over the years including service leadership roles with both Our Lady Help Of Christians School District #1 and Parkland Hospital Auxiliary Teamsters Local 2121

The town of Blue Island, Illinois was founded in 1848 by the amalgamation of two adjacent villages. The original village, Lisle and Clearfield, was located on the east side of the river in what is now Cook County. The new village, Blue Island, was located on the west side of the river in Kane County.
