In 1876, a group of men from Blue Island, Illinois Rifle Club decided to arm themselves in order to protect their small town. They began making their own gun slings and using them to shoot at birds and other animals in the local park. The rifle club continued to make their own guns and sling equipment until 1903 when they met up with a group of men from Moline, Illinois who were also trying to protect their small town. The Moline Rifle Club decided to join forces with the Blue Island Rifle Club in order to create a more effective force.

The history of Blue Island begins with two men, Abram and John Haggerty, who founded the village of Haggerty in 1855. They named it after their home island in Scotland, Haggerty Isle. The first settler to arrive in what is now Blue Island was Samuel Browning on December 1, 1860. He built a log cabin and planted corn on his land which he later sold to Elisha Whetstone for $4 per bushel. Whetstone grew crops for many years before moving away to start his own farm southeast of present-day Blue Island. In 1871, Alexander Forbes came to live on Blue Island from Minneapolis and began trading goods with local farmers and settlers alike. He soon became one of the most popular leaders in the community due to his generosity and support for local businesses. In 1886, he donated land that makes up much of today's downtown area to create a new public square known as Forbes Square Park (). This marks the beginning of Blue Island's long relationship with philanthropy as an important factor in its economy and culture. The city of Blue Island, Illinois was founded on August 20, 1871 by the merger of two small towns in the county of Cook. The new town was named for the color blue and its residents were expected to wear blue clothing and accessories. The first post office in Blue Island opened on October 1, 1871. The population of Blue Island grew rapidly from its original settlers and a school was built in 1872. In 1878 a railroad station was constructed and the town became an important transportation hub for central IL. By 1907 Blue Island had a population of over 5,000 people. A fire destroyed most of the downtown business district in 1916 but rebuilt quickly with support from local businesses and citizens. Businesses resumed their normal operations after World War I ended and by 1932 there were over 10 businesses operating in downtown Blue Island. During World War II, Blue Island played an important role as a munitions production center for southern IL due to its location on the railroads that transported arms across state lines to Beaumont, Texas and other nearby cities. After the war, many businesses closed down or moved away as competition from larger cities began to emerge. However, some companies still managed to stay active through the years such as JBL Rubber Company which manufactured basketball sneakers until 1984; Kwik-E-Mart which operated until 1992; Stereo Repair shop which continued operation until 2003; and Pizzeria Grande which is still open today
