The first Europeans to visit Blue Island were French fur traders in 1747. The area that now makes up Blue Island was part of the Ottawa Indian Nation until 1803 when it was ceded to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1836, John Davenport and his brother James arrived on an American steamboat from St. Louis and set out for what would become known as Davenport Land (now Kansas). They named their new land "Blue Island" after one of their ship's sails caught on a tree in Lake Michigan and became visible from where they were landing. Davenport had visionaries like himself who realized that this land could be used for agriculture and industry if properly developed; he would name his successors "the fathers of Chicago." The first coal mine opened on Blue Island in 1841 by Samuel Fritchman. By 1863 there were over 100 businesses operating on Blue island with a total payroll of $5 million! This economic development led to growth within Kane County as well as throughout Illinois due to waves of immigrants coming here seeking opportunity: Germans, Irishmen, Italians, Poles etc., creating a wealth which fueled its current prosperity overall today. The opening of Armour World Trade Center – which dwarfed any other facility at that time – also helped spur industrial growth in Kane County which has continued unabated even as suburbanization has spread throughout Cook County since the early 21st century; while jobs have shifted away from manufacturing into services such as retail trade and health care, blue-collar jobs have continued to grow through heavy local demand for goods produced by small businesses across all sectors (not just high tech).

In 1827, James Wolk and other settlers arrived from Maryland. The townsite of Blue Island was platted in 1830 by George Washington Carver and others under the name "Wolk's Landing." It became a village in 1833 when it had a population of 100 people. On May 9, 1836, David Sibley erected the first post office at Blue Island with Alfred Payson as Receiver General. This office operated until October 15, 1840 when it was discontinued because of an illness at the post office which led to its namesake being given permanent title to that position by Samuel Denton on November 2, 1840. On November 2nd 1840 Samuel Denton gave permanent title to this position to Alfred Payson after he had served as his assistant for several years
The first European to explore the area now known as Blue Island was Giovanni da Verrazzano, who sighted it in 1524. The island was named for a blue water coloration on its surface. It wasn't until 1793 that the first permanent settler arrived on Blue Island when John Stephenson purchased land from the Sac and Fox Indians. He built a cabin there and started growing corn, beans, and other crops. In 1814, Stephenson sold his land to Josiah Quincy. Quincy founded the village of Quincy on Blue Island in 1815. The village became an incorporated town in 1905.
