Gun magazines have a long and storied history in Blue Island, Illinois. The first gun magazine to be published in the city was the "Blue Island Gazette" which was established on May 1, 1837. From that time until 1860, the "Gazette" was the only paper published in Blue Island. The first gunsmith in Blue Island was John H. Nichols who opened his business on Main Street in 1841. In 1865, Dr. George Fenton purchased the business from Nichols and renamed it "Fenton's Gun Shop". The shop operated until 1902 when it moved to its current location on Michigan Avenue. In 1907, Gold Star Manufacturing Company founded a gun magazine center which became known as Gold Star Arsenal & Magazine Company Incorporated. In 1912, Gold Star merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (WRA). WRA continued to produce guns and ammunition under its own name until it was sold to Beretta AG of Italy in 1984. At that time, Beretta began producing firearms under the new name of Italian Rifle Manufacturers Association (IRMA). From 1980-1986, Redding Distributors had a store located at 5th and Vesey Streets in downtown Blue Island which functioned as a sales center for WRA products as well as selling reloads and other NRA Supplies items.

Blue Island, Illinois was settled in 1836 by the Potawatomi. The first post office on the town was founded in 1840. In 1851, Blue Island became a village and in 1857, it became an organized township. On November 3, 1860, Blue Island became a city under the name of Chicago.
Blue Island, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wheaton–Arlington−Springfield, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community is located on Blue Island Lake and has a total area of . The name "Blue Island" comes from an early settler's description of the area: "A blue-green lake surrounded by woods." In 1881, when Chicago was still a rough frontier town, residents of Blue Island voted to annexation into the city. Chicago refused to give up its exclusive right to annex villages within its boundaries and so Blue Island became part of Wheaton Township instead. The community began as a farming village with only six homes and twenty-five people in 1901. By 1915, it had grown to over 100 homes with 400 people. During World War II, many Wheaton citizens served in the military or were drafted; many also worked in factories during the war years. After the war ended, many businesses closed down and jobslessness returned as prices for goods increased due to inflation caused by America's involvement in World War II. Starting in the late 1960s through most of the 1970s there was significant growth in blue-collar manufacturing jobs which have continued until today with some notable exceptions such as computer programming and health care services (although this industry has experienced recent declines).

The first magazines to be designed for firearms were the Colt 1873 rifle magazine and the Winchester 1886 shotgun magazine. Ammunition magazines were also designed for handguns such as the Smith & Wesson Model 1887 revolver.
Blue Island is a small town in the west side of Illinois, on the banks of the Mississippi River. The community was founded by Captain John Blue in 1821 as a trading post on the river. Blue Island's unique history began with its first settler, Elias Howe. Howe arrived in 1820 from New York and built a log cabin on what is now Canal Street. He was followed by his wife and three children, who all settled in Blue Island within two years of each other. The Howes ran their village for more than 30 years, until they sold it to John Dutton in 1851. Dutton had been born in nearby Mount Carmel and later served as Mayor of Chicago before moving to Blue Island to become its first Postmaster-General. Dutton's successors continued to run the community until it came under federal control during World War II as part of the Allotment Act of 1944. At that time, most of Blue Island reverted back to state control and remained unincorporated until 1984 when it became one of 12 communities administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation through I-PASS program. The current name given to Blue Island today is commemorating its connection with blues music pioneer Reverend Cosey Littlejohn, who died there in 1951 at the age of 78 years old. Littlejohn had come originally from Wabash County, Indiana and started playing music at local dances while working as an instructor at Parsonage Institute in Mt Carmel (now Mount Olivet). When he moved to Blue Island after his death, many people there adopted his style - primarily swingin' country blues - which gave birth to what is now known as "Reverend Littlejohn's Blues." The Blue Island, Illinois History Museum is a museum located in the town of Blue Island, Illinois. It was opened in 1981 and contains artifacts from the history of the town and the area around it.
