Blue Island, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 3,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Blue Island has been home to the Kankakee Manufacturing Company since 1871 and is now a ghost town. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in 1824 from Massachusetts. They named their village after the blue color of sky during summertime on the lakefront where they lived. In 1871, two men by the name of Cook and Wahl founded the Kankakee Manufacturing Company in Blue Island which manufactured farm implements and other agricultural products until it closed its doors in 1957.
The Blue Island area was first settled by the Kankakee Nation in 1811. The town of Blue Island was founded in 1837 and named for the blue color of the sky. The population of Blue Island grew rapidly during the 1840s, due to a expanding trade network that linked Illinois with the far west. By 1850, the town had reached over 2,000 people. However, by 1861, after years of conflict between Native Americans and white settlers, most of Blue Island was burned to the ground by Union forces as part of an effort to clear land for farming purposes. Afterward, many residents left for other parts of Illinois or Canada. In 1938, Blue Island was merged into Chicago as part of a larger city-state merger known as Cook County.
