Blue Island is a small town in Macomb Township, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1845 by John and Anna Blueberry as a farming community on a small island in the Fox River. The name "Blue Island" first appeared on a deed to the land from Nicholas Blueberry, father of Anna Blueberry, dated October 12, 1847. In 1851 John and Anna moved their farm to what is now the east side of Main Street. They raised corn and cattle there until 1862 when they sold their farm and relocated to what is now Western Avenue. In 1865 Anna's brother-in-law George Allaire built an all-purpose store on Main Street that became known as The Allaire Store (later renamed Allaire Hardware). In 1870 David Keyes purchased much of the blueberries growing on Blue Island from John & Anna Blueberry for $2 per acre. He started picking them up every day during summertime and selling them fresh to local farmers who had brought him some seedlings from Illinois State University where he was studying agriculture. By 1880 keyes had developed enough interest in blueberries to begin packing those berries into boxes for shipment overseas but he never reached profitability because his business model differed from early American processors who marketed their product under brand names such as Jiffy Lube or Colgate Toothpaste which were then familiar to consumers across America In 1893Keyes' son Clifford Keyes opened Keyes' Drugs (now known as Clifton Pharmacy) at 125th Street and Western Avenue; it remains one of Chicago's most iconic stores and remains one of the largest drug stores in North America today with over 2 million square feet of floor space One significant event that took place in this time period occurred when Mayor Richard Moline made an appearance at Keyes' Drugs during its opening celebration; he announced that he would be appointing keyes as mayor pro tem after winning electionalduring his inaugural term The late 1800s saw many changes take place within Macomb Township including increased population growth due largely to industrialization outside of Chicago which led to more people moving into towns like Blue Island seeking accessto good schools, economy opportunities along with easy access arterial roads leading out into larger cities
The first European to visit Blue Island was Dutchman Hendrick Chouteau in 1819. He named the island for his son, blue-eyed Chouteau. In 1822, the U.S. government established a military post on Blue Island, which served as a training ground for troops during the War of 1812. The post was abandoned in 1830 and again in 1836 due to its location near Chicago's then-nascent port. In 1863, construction began on a new railroad line from Rockford to Danville, Illinois. The Blue Island Railroad was extended from its original terminus at Blue Island through the town of Addison to Danville in 1865; at that point, it became part of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway system. In 1907, the Chicago and North Western Railway merged with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad; as a result, Blue Island became part of the newly created Penn Central Railroad system. Penn Central discontinued service on October 1, 1968; however, trackage remained open within an easement granted by Illinois State Normal University until May 1st of that year when it transferred control over to CSX Corporation effective July 1st following their acquisition of all assets of PENN CENTRAL (the last surviving remnant of Philadelphia & Reading RR) Since being acquired by CSX Corporation in 2007 there has been little activity on any portion Of this once vibrant community now just south side IHOP closed down they used to have music night going late into the night goin out onto busy main street nothing much has happened since then
