This small town has always been an important agricultural center with a wide range of businesses from farm to pet store. A variety of crops are grown here including corn, soybeans, peas and beans, wheat, oats, potatoes and fruits such as apples and pears. The first European to visit Blue Island was Jacques Marquette in 1679, and he documented the island as it appeared on his map. In 1795, Nicholas-Jacques Carpentier, captain of the French ship La Salle, explored and claimed Blue Island for France. The first hotel on Blue Island was built by Simon Montresor in 1824.
