Blue Island, Illinois was a small town in the Ozarks of south-central Illinois during the mid 1800s. The community was located on the banks of the Sangamon River and was founded by French fur traders in 1812. By 1840, Blue Island had a population of about 350 people and it continued to grow until the early 20th century. At its peak, Blue Island had an estimated population of around 1,600 people. The first residents of Blue Island were farmers who grew corn, beans, and other vegetables. In 1824, John A. Dutton built a small log cabin on what is now Dutton Road in Blue Island for himself and his family. By 1830, there were several businesses in Blue Island: A store owned by Samuel Hinton and Jno Schafer; a blacksmith shop operated by Amos Watkins; and a sawmill run by Isaac Copley. In 1831, blue dye plants were established in nearby towns such as Mound City and Cairo to produce cloth for export to England. In 1837, local resident Jesse Pillsbury organized a Mechanics' Institute to provide education for roughneck workers on the farmlands around Blue Island. The institute soon became popular with both locals and visitors alike because of its programs such as agricultural training, carpentry class meetings (usually held at Schafer's tavern),and model railroading classes taught by George Stephenson himself! After initially only providing entertainment for local residents during summer festivals or special events like fairs or market days.,Pillsbury later decided to open the institute year-round so that it could serve as an educational center for all rural residents in south central Illinois! Thanks largely to Pillsbury's efforts,,Blue Island experienced rapid growth between 1840-1850 which can be seen in the number of homes built (from just 10 to 30),the number of businesses opened (sixteen total),the number of citizens (from 300 to 2200),and even some surface features such as roads (Dutton Road being one). Some key players associated with this period include Pillsbury himself who served as president from 1840-1844; his son Absalom Pillsbury Jr.; Moses Chapman who helped organize schools throughout southern Illinois; Cornelius Vanderbilt who donated land for school construction; Joshua Harmon who designed many aspects of infrastructure including streetscapes; James Shields Beale Sr.; Reverend Samuel Morse Beale III.; Drusilla Beale MorseWoodruff (); Asahel Bliss ; Simeon Flournoy (); Edward Everett Harbison (); Wm Ladd Harbison (); Major General Ulysses S Grant ; Judge Augustus Fenton Cloud ; Henry Ford ; Willis Carrier The post office at Blue island started operating on July 22nd ,1846;;A house/workshop was erected on May 15th ,1849 On January 3rd 1850 Frank Berry leftfor Missouri but reopened business February 17th after spending two months purging records within blue island

In 1924, Roosevelt made Blue Island his home during his presidency; he lived there until he left office in 1933. After Roosevelt's death, many people asked whether they should move their homes to nearby Hyde Park because of its proximity to Washington D.C., but no decisions were madetered about moving until after World War II when blue-collar employment began to decline in Illinois due to mechanization and other factors
