Blue Island is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,078 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Blue Island was John Payton in 1847. Payton named his new land "Bagley's Prairie", after General David Bagley, the founder of DeKalb County and one of the signers of the United States Constitution. In 1858, Jens Christensen opened a sawmill on what is now First Street in Blue Island to produce lumber for shipbuilders on Lake Michigan. The town was founded as a result of this business venture and began to grow rapidly due to its location and access to transportation. In 1870, Mayor Julius Prentice built the first schoolhouse in Blue Island which became known as "Prentice Elementary". In 1913, Dr. George Hines added an elevator to the school building which allowed students from different blocks within the city of Chicago to attend his school together without having to walk separate routes each way! Later that year, Dr. Hines also donated land east of town for a high school which would become “Hines High School”; this donation marked the beginning of Blue Island’s long affiliation with education and innovation! In 1914, when World War I started, local businesses contributed money towards purchasing rifles for defense purposes; these donations helped support our military during wartime! During World War II, many local residents volunteered their time and talents toward helping make America safe; these efforts are commemorated by patriotic murals located throughout town! After World War II ended, many blue islanders chose careers outside their home towns- some becoming mayors or state legislators while others found success as entrepreneurs or corporate managers; but no matter what they did or left behind them- they all knew that they had always come back home: “bluestatee”

Blue Island, Illinois is the most populous city in and the county seat of McHenry County, Illinois. The population was 853 at the 2010 census and 1,241 at the 2015 census. The city is located on a peninsula which separates two branches of the Chicago River. It lies about 23 miles (39 km) north-northwest of downtown Chicago. The first settlers in what is now Blue Island were fishermen who came to area in 1833 by way of Galion Bay on the Wisconsin River. They named their new community after an island near Wales that they had seen while on their trip downriver. By 1835, blueberries had been grown there and early residents built a summer home on what is now State Street. In 1836, John Tilton purchased land from Daniel Freeman for $2,000 cash; Tilton would later become one of McHenry County's first mayors and serve three terms (1841-1845). In 1840, John Ahern bought 2 acres (1 ha) southwest of present day Blue Island from James Hickey for $4 Canadian dollars – this site would later become Ahern Park. In 1846, Elijah Snow opened a hotel called "The White House" on State Street where he entertained visiting dignitaries during America's Civil War era; today it still stands as a popular tourist attraction open to the public since 1896. When slavery was abolished in 1865, many African Americans moved to Blue Island to start anew as free people; some remain here to this day as black citizens of McHenry County
Blue Island was first settled by the Potawatomi in the early 1800s. The town was originally named Blue Island because of the blue water that surrounded it. The name was changed to its current name in 1881 due to a confusion with another town in Illinois, Blue Island Lake.
