At this time, all settlement within present-day Bloomington Township took place on or near first street east/west running through it; however, by 1830 Ephraim Ziegler had built a small cabin at what is now Third Avenue and Business Street). By 1836, James Knoppers had acquired 1st mile (3 km) north east (now northeast corner blocks south/northwest corner blocks west/east block), southeast corner block south/northwest corner block west/east block) and northeast corner block north/south blocks east/west block). The Townsite Plan filed with recorded townships in Sangamon County dated November 12th 1836 shows 6 lots totaling . . . $313 for lot 001 – 509 & 610 – 711 – 812 & 813 – 914 were sold to Jnoppers for $2 per acre ($35 total). There were no buildings erected until after 1840 when one store was built on First Street between Noland Avenue and 3rd Ave which became known as 'Foster's Store'. In early 1840 James Knoppers organized a Methodist Episcopal church with worship services starting December 15th 1840 at 'Foster's Store'. This congregation served as an anchorage for several other churches that formed during this time including Baptist Churches (organized January 1861), Presbyterian Churches (organized February 1861), Congregational Churches (organized May 1861), Lutheran Churches - St Michael’s Lutheran Church Octave Road Nov 21 1862) German Reformed Churches - Christliche Kirchengemeinde Klingenberg Sept 13 1863), Greek Orthodox Church - Holy Trinity Monastery Apr 11 1865) After serving as an anchorage for many other denominations over a period spanning more than fifty years various school districts were established including: Knoxville School District #1 Feb 2 1870); Moline School District #2 Mar 25 1870); Carbondale School District #3 Aug 10 1871); Normal School District No 4 Dec 3 1872). Many businesses were also established such as Hennepin Bank february 24 1880), Davenport Shoe Factory april 14 1886), Wacker Trucking Company october 28 1889). A local legend has it that General Anthony Wayne slept under his tent at Foster's Store during his campaign against Daniel Boone in 1800 while campaigning along State Line Road northwest to Urbana because he felt too exposed travelling through Illinois using public roads rather than traveling down Clinton Road like Boone did. Another story tells how General George Rogers Clark passed through our town one evening en route to Springfield via Carpentersville when he stopped at Foster's store to buy some feed for his army encampment nearby; he was so impressed with our town that he ordered everyone inside to have their meal before continuing on his journey. A much older story goes something like this: While living near Romeoville in DeKalb County I used to go into town every day around lunchtime for waterhanry since there was never any else available close by except Spring Lake which we could only get from going out onto Long Island which cost us quite a bit each time we went; one day I walked into town and seen three stores open up side by side just across First Street from where I lived - one owned by Mr Peabody who handled all our goods hereabouts; Mrs Peabody ran the grocery next door which continued until her death about 1935; then there was Mr Fenton who operated an ice cream parlor across the street from where we bought our food thenceforth until about 1945; finally there was Harry Burtons who ran an insurance agency next door until 1939 after which time it closed down because they couldn't compete with better priced agencies open closer by]; these shops are still standing today but without their stores these businesses might not have survived either! It should be noted that even without these stores many people cooked their meals outside using whatever materials they could find lying around such as dry leaves or wood chips! Many schools throughout our community operated out-of-town facilities during those days including: Knoxville High School Classes 1916-1920 taught drawing & painting classes at Elmhurst Female Seminary [now Elmhurst Junior High], Moline High School Classes 1917-1920 taught physical education classes at Cookman Academy [now Dixon Tech Center], Carbondale Central High Schools Classes 1918-1921 taught vocational courses at Cookman Academy [now Dixon Tech Center],Normal school district No4 Separate Roomed Education Building opened Dec 3 1850]. Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid came Through Our Town One Day In October 1926 When They Visited Our Community On Their road trip From California To see If We Were Any Interested In seeing them play At A Game Of Football Here In America!. Union Pacific Railroad Station Just West Of Downtown Blkingtons main drag opened Jan 1 1927]! After years of hard work numerous new homes began being erected throughout downtown Bloominton beginning dates unknown although some earliest examples can be found dating back to1830 on East 3rd St between Noland Ave&First St]. However unlike some major cities where building permits often went unissued or simply been forgotten about apartment buildings rapidly sprung up throughout downtown Chicagoland creating high density housing development almost overnight thanks largely in part to immigrants coming here seeking opportunities unavailable back home due primarily joblessness+rural life+ lack o opportunity=depression
