In 1837, John Crouch founded Blooming Grove Township on land that he purchased from General Edward Braddock’s widow Anna Maria Braddock Schempp after her husband’s death at Fort Dearborn under harsh military conditions following their unsuccessful attempt to explore Upper Canada. On July 1st 1978 Bloomington became an official city limits city with its own government with full civic powers The first post office was established at Blooming Grove Township on October 8th 1830 by Cornelia Hesselius; it operated for six months before being moved to Plainfield where it remained until 1840 when it was moved again to Westville where it stayed until 1850 when it was moved to Blanchester where it continued operations until 1861 when it closed due to financial troubles In 1871–72 David Smedley built Smedley’s creamery which remains one of downtown Blanchester’s most notable landmarks today In 1865 – 66 Robert Janssen opened Linnell & Co., brick merchants who still operate from their original store location today on Main Street just east of I-74 In 1870 John Pappas opened Pappas Bros., grocery stores starting with Oneida Street between Broad Ripple Avenue and State Street In 1902 George Wecker started Wecker Drug store which continues operation today next door to Sears Tower across I-74 from Pappas Bros . In 1906 Reuben Brandt openedBrandt Grocery Store which operated for over 100 years before moving out into other businesses such as plumbing supplies etc .
