Gun targets have been a part of Bloomington, Illinois for over 100 years. The first target was made in 1892 by J.E. Goddard and Wm. Ladd at the then-new Rinehart Arsenal on State Street. At that time, Bloomington was a small town with few resources and no means of manufacturing guns or ammunition. To make up for this, Goddard created two separate companies to produce target goods: One company produced rifles and pistols, while the other made artillery rounds and mortar shells. These two companies would continue to produce target products until 1889 when Congress passed the National Firearms Act which banned all gun production in the United States (except for those used in hunting). This left Bloomington without any sources of targets, so local citizens began making their own using whatever materials they could find. In 1908, John Hargrave donated a large amount of land east of State Street to the city for use as an armory parking lot (now known as Rinehart Park). This allowed the city to begin manufacturing firearms again and provided new opportunities for target manufacture statewide (although some guns still remain manufactured here today). The first handgun targets were created in 1915 by William & Harry Hargrave at their old mill on Industrial Road. These targets were made from wood with a red “H” inside a white circle designating them as "gun targets." Gun Targets continued to be manufactured here until shortly after World War II when production stopped due to prohibitionism once again reigning supreme in America (though individual Targetmasters still exist today)). Today, Targets can be found throughout central Illinois not only as place where people can take aim at virtual steel cans but also as art objects enjoyed by visitors from around the world who come to visit our great community!

The first known gun target was built by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795 and it was a simple wooden post with a small hole through it. The post was placed on the ground, six feet from the firing line, and fired at. The first successful use of guns on ships took place during the War of 1812 when USS Constitution (1797) was hit by gunfire from HMS Guerrière (1805). Gunnery crews were also responsible for hitting British warships during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) using their cannons. In 1861, US Marines used large iron gratings as targets to shoot at during their skirmishes with Confederate forces ashore at Beaufort Harbor, North Carolina. In 1865, Union general Ulysses S. Grant ordered his army’s artillery to fire on Fort Wagner in South Carolina after Confederate General Robert Ewart Pickens had failed to surrender following an attack on that fort three days earlier. The fort became known as “the ring of death” because so many soldiers died trying to enter or leave it. After World War II, gun targets gradually fell out of favor and were largely replaced by air strikes and missiles as primary weapons of war.
