The city was founded on December 14, 1817 by Joshua Blount and John Pemberton as a small community on the north bank of the Chicago River. What started as small villages in central Illinois quickly grew into one of America's largest metropolitan areas thanks in part to strong local government leadership including mayors (John Pembertone in 1834-36; Amos Kendall in 1840-43; James Caldwell in 1850), streetcars (1872), education (1835), industry (1910) and growth via annexation (Bloomfield Township 1912; Normal Township 1918). Today, Bloomington remains committed to promoting diversity through its community engagement programs that embrace all forms ofexpression - music/theatre/arts/food/diversity The first residents who settled in what would become Bloomington were farmers from central Indiana who had arrived there for wagon trains following Jackson Purchase land sales between 1800-1801. By 1806, about 10% of all people living west of Chicago were settled within three miles (6 km) of where normal now stands due to natural flooding caused by unpredictable rains known then as wetland Plain which extended from present day Montgomery County eastward along I-90 until it reached what is now Cook County line.. This area was also called “The Bluffs” because they formed high ground overlooking many waterways that drained into Lake Michigan’s western basin creating marshy flats or prairies surrounded by woods across three ridges running northwest to southeast: Ottawa Ridge on the east side; Wabash Ridge across Michigan Heights Boulevard on the west side ; Richardson Ridge running northwesterly off Ontario Road between Holmes Road Park Southwest corner and Northwestern edge Of Northwestern Business District map drawing prepared for USGS National Geophysical Data Center 4th edition Figure 1., With these ridges came abundant animal life including deer, bearkins (occasionally their tracks still can be seen), turkey vultures & jack rabbits! At some point someone decided that this “wilderness” would make an ideal place for agriculture so they began building homes here soon after![] These early settlers were mostly men who farmed while their wives took care of housework such as planting crops,, raising livestock etcetera They did not have electricity or plumbing yet so if there was something they needed like water they had to go down stairs to get it! [] From these early days until 1978 when electric service began throughout much southern Illinois we could see plumbers coming out onto our streets every morning with buckets full o' water just like today!"] In 1834 Joshua Blount donated 2 acres (0 hectares) southbound along current Northside Drive extending into East High Street towards Ryan building site for College use only! He named this spot "Bloomingdale", later changed back to "Bloominginton". Normal School opened at this location Dec 3rd 1830.] On February 17th 1840 John Pembertone appointed Amos Kendall mayoralty election results show he won with 396 votes against 244 ballots cast for James Caldwell third place with 38 votes%. A referendum approved changing city charter effective March 15th 1840 giving Kendall directorship over public works ] As mayor Magonik Parks oversaw construction projects such as laying down new street bricks at State Capitol sitevs Council Chambers located opposite current Ryan building site , turning riverbank into promenade fronting State Capitol lawn vs erecting railings around old Capitol buildings . The city also built several buildings used for government offices such as Main Street Hall (now known as Brady Building), Firestone Library Annex (now known as Hegarty Building) and Waterfront Park which now includes parts of First National Bank Tower. In 1926 efforts were made to create a new campus for Purdue University which would eventually be named after James Kahlil Gibbons Peterson who served as president from 1919 until his death in 1927. However, this idea never came to fruition because money limitations caused by World War I prevented any significant construction projects from taking place until after World War II when resources became available again following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor). In 1959 Bloomington experienced its first hurricane when Floyd struck western Illinois causing extensive damage including $2 million in damage to businesses alone including $1 million worth of property destruction. That same year saw another large hurricanes when Jeffrey hit southwestern Illinois causing severe flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses along with severe winds that left over 100 people dead or missing across both states combined
