Bloomington, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 47,711 at the 2010 census. Bloomington is the principal city of the Bloomington-Normal metropolitan area, which had a population of over 150,000 as of July 1, 2010. Bloomington is one of two cities in Cook County and the only municipality in Normal Township. It bordersNormal to the south and west and Decatur to the north and east. The first settler in what became Bloomington was Nicholas Flournoy on February 20th 1837. He purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land from John Kinzie for $3/acre (€0.75/km²). In 1839 he built a log cabin on his property which served as home until 1840 when he moved to a permanent location on present day Flournoy Street. On November 17th 1840 Mr. Flournoy donated land for a Methodist churchyard and school lot on Dearborn Road southwest of present day State Street near where Davenport Municipal Airport now stands. The congregation met there for three years before moving to their current site in 1849 on Elm Street northeast of US-31W just east of what is now First Avenue South between Randolph Road and Main Street with Mrs.(Mrs.)Flournoy serving as treasurer during this time frame In 1850–51 residents approved annexation by Normal Township but it did not take place until1858 due to lack of support from township trustees On October 15th 1860 settlers Narcisse(Nicholas) Beaulieu(baptized October 15th 1827)and Francois Lefebvre(baptized December 12th 1829) started farming 160 acres (5 km²) around present day Crystal Lake after driving 10 miles (16 km) down Lincoln Highway from Racine Mr Beaulieu died suddenly while plowing his field on January 8nd 1861 leaving behind 4 wives & 10 children under age 16: Marie-Thérèse; J’hanan; Adaline; Léonard; Émile; Huberta; Linaudiere ; Nancie Families were required to furnish their own hay barns so straw could be sold back into plain farmer’s markets or used elsewhere within town limits at market prices However much later industry arrived & these barns disappeared gradually replaced by large modern buildings brought about by advances in transportation
