The first store opened up on South Congress Street Decatur Block just east of today's Interstate 294 exit from I-295 approximately one mile north northeast from where downtown Bloomingdale now stands! This store later became known asthe 'Central Store'. In 1902 Elisha Caldwells new grocery store opened at Third & Ohio Streets which remains one of today's most iconic buildings in Blossomtown! Other early stores followed such as Mrs Cummings' Feed Store (now Macy's) at Second & Dearborn Streets operated by Emma Cummings; Pembertons Drugstore(now JCPenney) at Fourth & Dearborn Streets operated by John Pembert; Smith Bros Hats department store(now Sears) at Seventh & Indiana Streets; Gudeys Clothing Emporium(later Gudeys Department Stores)in what is todaynorthwest cornerof First Ave NE&NW cornerof Washington St SEopened Oct 1865; Selfridge Hardware Company Bearerbridge opening Feb 1916 It should be noted that all these stores were quite small fry compared to today's mega chains like Walmart! Bloomingdale soon outgrew its original location making efforts to annexed other areas around town but this proved unsuccessful due largely to lack offormation oridia/funding propulsion when annexation requests were made And so another round Of petitions were filed resulting in incorporation into City Of Blooingdales On October 20th 1907!!! finally our great little community had taken root......and we are still growing today
