During World War I, ammunition manufacturing came under military control as munitionsproduction shifted from Europe to America. At its peak, Stoneham Arsenal produced over two million rounds a day for use on both World Wars. Unfortunately, throughout World War IAmerica’s reliance on foreign materials led to an increase in military casualties through accidents and enemy shelling that caused millions of civilian deaths and injuries. As technology improved during the 20th century, so too did American ammunition production capabilities. By 1940, Stoneham Arsenal had become one of the largest producers of munition products in the world with an annual output totaling over $2 billion dollars!
