The original name for this city - Alton - was changed because two farmers who were leading candidates for election as Mayor found that their names appeared together on ballots too often! As Alton grew more established (and less likely to be called "Alton"), it became necessary to come up with another name that would fit both our community's history (Algonquin) as well as our aspirations for continued growth (Bloomingdale). In short order we came up with "Bloomingdale" which honors not only our pioneer ancestors but also all those who have followed them over time – including today's residents who have helped make this community one of economic stability and opportunity.

Bloomingdale is a borough in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,903 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bloomingdale was founded on December 14, 1847 by Captain George Washington Healey and his family after they bought land from the Chisholm Indian Nation near what is now Englewood. The Healey family operated a flour mill until 1855 when they sold it to John Pierpont Morgan and his associates for $2 million. In 1865, Morgan built a home on State Street in Bloomingdale which he named "The White House". In 1886, Mayor Julius Caesar Williams dedicated the first public park in Bloomingdale- Riverside Park. In 1902, entrepreneur Julius Caesar Williams purchased 320 acres of woodland east of downtownChicago for $1 million and constructed what would become North Side Stadium (now Wrigley Field). In 1905,Williams merged with other entrepreneurs to form the Tribune Company which became one of America's largest newspapers and television networks. To commemorate this occasion,Williams erected a statue of himself at River Ridge Boulevard and Kedzie Avenue in Bloomingdale early in 1906. "The Tribune Company: A History" (1999) by Edwin Hemenway research historian at Northern Illinois University Press illuminates some key issues around Newspaper company history that are relevant to current events: "For nearly seventy years following its founding as an enterprise devoted exclusively to print media—and up through their conversion into electronic media—the Tribune Company has been one of American society’s most cherished institutions." This quote comes from page 236 which discusses how Newspapers have always been important but their transition into electronic media has changed many aspects including who profits from advertising etc.: ". . .electronic diffusion created new opportunities for print publishers who could reach more people than before; it also opened up new markets for broadcasting companies that could reach larger audiences without investing in long local stations; finally it made possible widespread use of billboards throughout metropolitan areas." With these changes came increased competition among newspaper publishers as well as broadcasters so much so that some were forced to divest themselves or fold within several years during the Great Depression era according to “Tribune Co-opoly: How Two Standard Bearers Lost Their Grip”(2008) by Ardent Research Associates Inc., pgs 9-10.). However less has been written about Bloomingdalians such as Mrs Lillian Healey McCain whose life story follows her father Gussie Healey who started out working at Sears Roebuck & Company alongside his brothers before starting his own store called Gussie's Clothes Outlet on Mayflower Drive in 1936 where he continued until 1990 when he closed down due to health reasons aged 95 years old!
