This system replaced an older educational model where each community functioned as its own separate school district. Bloomingdale voters approved bond issues to build two high schools –one for boys and one for girls – and funded these schools with property taxes collected from residents who still lived on their farms or in surrounding villages. The addition of Bloomfield Hills to the city limits made it difficult for students living near Westchester to attend either high school; however, many students did attend nearby North Side High School until 1955 when it merged into CPS as well. Today, Bloomingdale continues to serve as home to some of CPS' largest campuses: Northwestern University-Northwestern Park Campus (which includes both Blouing Dale High School and Northside High School) and Cook County Jail No 1–the oldest jail in Illinois–opened in 2006 on South Wacker Drive adjacent to Northwest Community College District’s Park Ridge Campus.

This initial land purchase sets the stage for much growth in Bloomingdale over the years including many homes, businesses, churches and schools being founded throughout its history including Blossomwood Elementary School which opened in 1957
