Bloomingdale is named for George Bloomfield, who purchased land here in 1835. The town was first settled by Germans and Irish immigrants in the 1830s and 1840s. It became an American city on November 3, 1856 when it merged with other cities in the Chicago metropolitan area. Bloomingdale has a rich history dating back to its earliest days as a German settlement on the banks of the Big Black River. In 1835, George Bloomfield bought land here from farmers near Decatur and founded Bloomingdale as one of America's original "Cities of Progress." The town quickly diversified its economy by becoming an important center for textile manufacturing and related businesses until World War II when it declined sharply due to heavy military spending inChicago. However, since 2000 Blossomdale has resumed some growth through initiatives such as its new downtown district and community partnerships.
Bloomingdale is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bloomingdale was founded in 1853 by Alexander and Martha Bloomfield as a small farming community on the edge of the then-prairie region. By 1870, it had grown to include about 800 residents and had become an important commercial center for agricultural production and transportation within Cook County. In 1892, Bloomingdale became part of the City of Chicago; however, it retained its own governing body until 1974. In 1912, President William Howard Taft issued an Executive Order creating Park Service District No. 2 around Bloomingdale Boulevard in order to provide recreational opportunities for residents and visitors who passed through or visited the town during their travels within Cook County or outside of Chicago metropolitan area. That same year also saw the opening of Bloomingdale's first store - J&J's Hardware Store - which would serve as a nucleus for what would become one of Chicagos most popular shopping districts today known as "The Blooms." In 1928, construction began on what is now Blossom Grove Cemetery; this cemetery would remain open to burial until 1965 when it was replaced by Brown Deer Cemetery due to overcrowding issues inside Cook County's other cemeteries). During World War II, many local businesses took advantage of military production exemptions offered by the US government in order to expand their operations and contribute financially to war efforts; examples include IRT Depot No. 5 (now Navy Pier) which grew from a single building on North Michigan Avenue into one of Illinois' largest industrial complexes; and Hwy 146 Business Enterprise Zone which became home to major automotive manufacturers including Ford Motor Company (later Automotive Parts Inc.) and Chrysler Corporation (later John DeLorean). In 1961, Bloomingdale voters approved a $50 million bond issue that financed muchneeded repairs and improvements to public schools across Cook County including new gymnasiums and science laboratories; these improvements were later followed up with another bond issue in 1978 that funded a new police station (which still stands today), expansions at both high school campuses (including new locker rooms), replacement of aging streetlights throughout town, installation of water towers/, paving projects etc.. These projects are still ongoing today with various updates/additions made each year such as updated lighting systems/equipment etc.. Bloomingdale has been noted for its beautiful parkland located just south of town along I-675 between State Street & Wabash Avenue called "The Blooms", many homes located near South Court Road (), Westchester Drive () & Meadowbrook Drive (). This parkland features more than 20 miles worthof nature trails ranging from easy beginner walks allthe way up to difficult multi-day hikes like The Ridge Trail (). There are also several baseball diamonds (), tennis courts () & skateboard parks (). There is also an amphitheater () where concerts have been held over the years such as David Bowie performs live!.
