Bloomingdale, Illinois is a small town located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 9,856 at the 2010 census. Bloomingdale is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by the city to the south, Indiana State University to the west, and Lake Michigan to the north. The village lies on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan and has a square block plan with an irregularly shaped core. Its original buildings date back to 1840. The town was organized in 1847 as a result of land purchases from several Dutch farmers who had come to America during the 1800s looking for new land to settle. Bloomingdale's first settler was Heman Ackermann, who built a cabin on what is now Elm Street. Ackermann was followed by his son-in-law Jacob Blumenfeldt, husband of Maria Volkmar (née Blankenhorn), who purchased three acres of land on North Prairie Avenue in 1853. In 1863, Abraham Kaplan bought two more acres from Blumenfeldt and founded Kaplan's grocery store on present day Elm Street and Washington Avenue. In 1875, Herman Weisbrodt bought two more acres from Kaplan and founded Weisbrodt's bakery on Main Street. In 1865, John Pritzker purchased one acre from Weisbrodt for $100 and established Pritzker United Methodist Church on that property in 1870. By 1886, all but one dairy business had closed in Bloomingdale because of economic reasons; however, Blumenfeldt’s grocery store continued operating until it closed its doors in 1919 due to bankruptcy protectionism then known as Prohibitionism which forbid any type of alcohol sales within state lines despite earlier efforts by various governments including federal prohibitionists like Abraham Lincoln). A few years later when Prohibition ended – although not before causing some damage – most businesses reopened although many were never able to fully recover due to high levels of debt incurred during prohibition as well as competition from other liquor stores opening up throughout Illinois following repeal In 1951–1952 McGraw-Hill published "A History of American Businesses" which includes an article about Bloomfield Grocery Store #1 which opened in 1850 according to author Edwin Goudreau: “Joe [Blumenfeldt] started out selling flour for breadmakers only; but soon he developed into what we now call a department store because he sold items such asothing (clothes) both new and used….WhenJohnPritzker acquired control over Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Publishers Incorporated (HBI), Bloomfield Grocery Store became one of their leading sources for books…It seems likely that HBI would have been quite successful if not for Prohibition." The first floor contained mostly general merchandise while upstairs there were departments such as shoeshine/bootblack services along with fine china and silverware etcetera . One account says that Mrs[erika]Moses came down with laryngitis during this time so her husband [Samuel] Moses took charge running things while she recovered upstairs…. Joe also began doing advertising campaigns promoting his products….. After Mrs[erika]'s return home they decided that Sam should run everything downstairs while she healed up upstairs…..
