Bloomingdale is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 69,829 as of the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in Chicago and the third-largest in its county. Bloomingdale is located on the south side of Chicago, bordered by Lake Michigan to the east and west, and by Ford Park to the north. Bloomingdale was founded in 1855 by Colonel John Bloomingdale as a village on a small farm just east of downtown Chicago. The first town meeting took place on November 14th that year. Captain George Whelan from Buffalo township organized the first company of men from Bloomingdale with Nathan Hale as captain and Samuel Halle as secretary/treasurer. In 1861 Bloomingdale became a full town under state charter #2287. In 1870 John Fenton purchased land at what is now North Avenue and West Street in downtownChicago for $1,000 which he named "Fenton's Grove". He proposed that Blingdale be moved to this location due to lack of space near South Side Chicago then known as "the swamp". On January 26th 1870 Fenton's Grove was dedicated and he constructed his own home there called "Fenton Manor". The original property included two lots totaling , one lot measuring . After Fenton's death in 1871 his widow donated another parcel of land to Blingland for development into an oval shaped park measuring . This site would eventually become Lincoln Park today. The city experienced heavy growth during the late 19th century due to industrialization along with new transportation methods such as streetcars which made access to markets much easier than when horses or wagons were used before them. By 1900bloomingdale had over 100 businesses including 12 banks & 10 grocery stores By 1910 it had 400 businesses including 24 banks & 36 grocery stores During World War I local citizens raised money through bake sales, car wash days, penny auctions etcetera for Victory Gardens which served as training grounds for American soldiers
