Bloomingdale is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,640 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bloomingdale is bordered by the city of Chicago to the south and west, Oak Forest to the north, Lemont to the east and south, and River Grove to the north-east. The first permanent settler in Bloomingdale was James Whelan who arrived in 1837. Whelan's farm was located on what is now North Western Ave., just east of present day Bloomingdale Ave.. In 1871, John Larkin purchased land from Whelan and built a ranch house on his property that still stands today. Larkin also founded what would become one of Bloomingdale's two churches – First Presbyterian Church (now Bishop Park United Methodist Church) in 1872 and Second Presbyterian Church (now Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church) in 1875. In 1895, William Corthron bought land at present day East 95th Street and North Western Ave., across from First Presbyterian Church for $5000000 dollars which he used for housing development called "Corthron Homes". Today these blocks are home to many local businesses including Pfizer Incorporated (formerly RJR Nabisco), JBL Audio & Video Corporation (formerly Sears Holdings Corporation), Pfeiffer Farms Dairy LLC., Northwest Mutual Insurance Company (), etc.. In addition to housing development there were also grocery stores such as Kroger Co., A&P Grocery Stores (), Safeway Supermarkets (), etc., as well as various other businesses like a movie theater (the old Alhambra Theatre), post office (), bank () and several restaurants (). One significant event during this time was when President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Bloomingdale on October 14th 1938 while he was campaigning for election against incumbent Joseph McCarthy in Illinois' 3rd congressional district (). While in town Mr. Roosevelt had lunch at The Gilded Cage restaurant where he met future Vice President Richard Nixon () and wife Eleanor () afterwards returning back home Mr. Roosevelt announced his candidacy for renomination for US Senate but withdrew after losing narrowly against Republican challenger Dan Rather (). After leaving office Mr. Roosevelt found new opportunity with his own business empire starting up Unilever plc.. Today Bloomingdale has continued its growth with many new residents coming over from adjacent suburbs such as Oak Forest or Lemont over the years - most notably Angelo Mozilo who established himself as one of America's most successful businessmen [] . As more people move into this small town it faces some unique challenges; namely its high rate of crime [] . Bloomingdale, Illinois was founded in 1847 by George Bloomingdale and his brothers. The family operated a successful cotton plantation until 1860, when they sold it to the Lincoln County Land Company. In 1871, Bloomingdale became a city and was incorporated as a village. It experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location on the Chicago River; its natural resources (including coal and oil); and its position as an agricultural center. In 1921, Bloomingdale merged with neighboring Evanston to form the city of Chicago.
In 1847, Bloomingdale was founded by George Blanchard and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named for Bloomingdale County in Illinois, where Blanchard lived. Bloomingdale's first store opened in 1851. In 1862, the town was incorporated as a village. In 1966, the village was merged into the city of Chicago.
