The town's history dates back to 1869 when it was organized as a village and then a city. In 1936, Berwyn voted to become an open-air Ammunition dump and today it remains one of the most polluted cities in Illinois with over two million residents living within five miles of its toxins level! The Berwyn community was founded in 1871 by farmers from Rockford Township and parts of Davenport Township. The town seal features an agricultural implements dealership on a bend in the creek. The name comes from "Beryl" (a white lead mineral), which local miners found while exploring for coal near their farmstead. In 1905, Berwyn became one of ten towns in Mclean County to become eligible for statehood; it was granted this status on December 3, 1912. On September 16, 1915, the village amended its charter to allow women to vote and hold office as trustees and officers. On November 4, 1925–months after General Motors Corporation opened a new plant in Berwyn – the first car manufactured there finally reached market demand when Chevrolet models were available for sale instead of just parts or demonstrations only; many locals attended GM's opening ceremonies that day with cars bought direct from the factory floor! In 1957–1958 Cadillac models were added to the line-up as well but production continued until 1961 when it closed due to economic recession caused by oil prices crashing lower than expected.

The first settlers of what would become Berwyn arrived in 1829 as part of the Great Migration from Northern Ireland to America. The town was organized on September 14, 1839 by Judge James Wilkinson and Dr. Joshua Barney. The community was named for General Joseph Berwyn who had commanded an American brigade during the Mexican–American War. The current incarnation of Berwyn began to form around 1940 when it became apparent that large numbers of people were moving into nearby streets such as Michigan Avenue and Wabash Avenue due to new industrialization occurring in Springfield and Northfield. At that time, there were only a few businesses located within the boundaries of what is now known as downtownBerwyn. By 1951, when Interstate 90 was built through Berwyn and other areas near downtown, development started anew throughout much of downtown with two major exceptions: One being Northwestern University's Medical School buildings which continue to be used today as mixed use housing (the other being Beechwood Shopping Center which has been converted into office space). In 1958-1959, construction began on what would become one of Chicago's largest shopping complexes - Marshalls Street Plaza - along Michigan Avenue between State Street and Randolph Street; this complex would eventually encompass over 200 stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Kress Bros., Macy’s Incorporated (now Macy’s), Nordstrom Rack & Company (now Kohl’s) and 20 restaurants including Belvedere Italian eatery (now Belvedere Pizza). This shopping center helped spur growth throughout much of downtown Berwyn while also providing jobs for many residents therein both before and after its opening In 1969-1970, another significant development took place when Pritzker Pavilion -- one of Chicagos largest concert venues at the time -- opened its doors to music fans across America during the Illinois Fairgrounds' "Peaceful World Series". With seating for approximately 65,000 people inside and an outdoor plaza measuring 100 feet by 50 feet accommodating up to 1 million more spectators over four days during summertime ($2 million budget), Pritzker Pavilion quickly became one of Chicagos most popular tourist attractions thanks in part to its unique design features which still remain today
