As HCMC grew larger it purchased additional properties near North Michigan Avenue so that it could expand its services into all parts of the county including Berwyn Township which became its own annexed community within HCMC limits. Berwyn, Illinois is a small town located in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Berwyn was James Hargrave in 1827. He and his family moved from Hartford, Connecticut to a farm on the east side of Chicago River near where it meets the south branch of the White River. In 1836, Hargrave purchased land on the west side of Chicago River which he named after his grandfather (George Washington Hargrave). The first post office in Berwyn was established in 1838. By 1840, there were six families living in Berwyn with ninety-five acres (35 hectares) of land. In 1847, John Ransom established a ferry service across the Chicago River between Berwyn and Springfield. In 1865, Samuel Morse opened a school for children in what is now Eldridge Heights; this school would later become one of America's leading private schools for girls called Mrs Morse's School (now Northwestern University). In 1870s and 1880s many new businesses were founded within Berwyn including cigar factories operated by John Pfeiffer and Wm Fisk & Sons Cigar Manufacturing Company; fruit stand operated by Mable Crouse & Co.; bakery operated by Jno Buhlmann; livery stable operated by Geo Fenton; general store run by Isaac Sayers; mdny store built on soon to be named Roosevelt Road (later renamed Lombard Road); dairy operated by Margaretta Boettcher until it merged with another dairy company later that year; and finally an insurance agency called Gossett & Hawkinson Insurance Company which would grow into one of America's largest insurance companies. Over time, other businesses cropped up in Berwyn including an ice cream parlor and a livery stable. during World War I, Berwyn's citizens helped raise money for the war effort by selling goods such as flour and butter from their homes. After the war,Berwyn experienced growth again with a large influx of new residents coming through the door due to jobs at nearby factories. However, by 1930 only 45 people lived in Berwyn while 5 businesses operated in town along with 7 churches and 1 school.
