The community was founded on November 1, 1892 byodus Berwyn and his brother-in-law Alonzo Barnes. The first post office in Berwyn opened in 1893. The name originated from a settler's discovery that there were several small brooks near the community. The railroad arrived in 1906 and made Berwyn an important center for transportation and commerce. Today, Berwyn is home to several large businesses including Dillard's Department Store and Sears Holdings Corporation. In recent years, the town has seen growth in its arts scene with new galleries opening up along with numerous concerts and events throughout the year.

Berwyn, Illinois is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, in the United States. The population was 1,972 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Berwyn was Jacob Sennett in 1818. He and his family moved from Hartford Connecticut to a farm on the east side of town in 1824. Berwyn's first school was built in 1827 by teacher John Waddell and pupils from nearby North Side Elementary School attended until it burned down in 1830. A new school building was erected on the same site between 1830 and 1835 by local farmers using lumber salvaged from an old post office building that had been destroyed by fire four years earlier. The first train to reach Berwyn Station arrived at this location on October 15th, 1865 with passengers consisting of three coaches filled with settlers coming to purchase land near Cookstown Lake. In 1870, Abraham Clark began farming some of what would become known as "Clark's Ridge" which lies along present day Clairton Road near where he built his own home later that year. By 1880, most of what became known asBerwyn had been developed with about 100 homes and businesses primarily centered around two large cotton plantations owned by G F Hutton & Sons (later merged into DuPont) and their employees who farmed subsistence crops such as corn, potatoes, oats and tobacco for their families during these difficult times." In 1892 newspaper publisher John Payson bought all the shares of Hutton parent company G F Hutton & Sons for $930 per share making him headmaster of one-third of America's largest cotton plantation system." In 1902 Paradee Carter purchased 2 acres northeast of present day Clairton Road from Ebenezer Cummings for $500 dollars becoming one of America's earliest developers within berwyn limits." After World War I when many farms were sold off due to enmity or lack thereof between various business interests within berwyn limits resultant economic stagnation ensued; however after repeal Of Prohibition Berwyn experienced rapid growth culminating with over 1000 residents by 1920." "In 1927 when Alfred Iverson purchased 10 acres northwest corner lot @ 102nd St would become today’s east side plaza," during Iverson’s ownership nearly every block located south/east (between State Street extending northerly past First Congregational Church (& Alley), current Route 47 running easterly thru Present day Village Center - including blocks bordering both alleyways) housed at least one business – more often than not several businesses because single blocks could only hold so many people at a time; Blocks located closer to downtown were particularly numerous – typically 3-4 businesses fronting State Street alone held over 50 customers daily! This unauthorized proliferation caused intense public opposition beginning around 1930 when merchants began demanding zoning changes allowing them increased hours OF operation plus larger storefront areas thereby limiting competition…." A blacksmith shop opened up on Commercial Drive just north of existing intersection now occupied by Parkview Terrace housing development following prohibition raids conducted there while bootlegging Still others operations took place such as a garage utilized by grocery store operator J C Greenham which generated revenue sufficient enough to pay interest payments on loan obtained prior thereto!!" From this point forward until prohibition repealed fully or partially in 1933 almost all businesses license plates sported either "P" or "DUPLICATE". At approximately this time Du Pont shuttered its entire production line outside Philadelphia resulting major layoffs throughout the organization…. DUPLICATE ceased operations completely less than 4 months after liquor prohibition ended…." Even though much smaller scale production continued unabated much later…..Du Pont again closed its plants outside Philly following 9/11 terrorist attacks resultsantly reducing employment opportunities even within Rahway Township where duplicate still operated until late 2005…." duPont did not make it easy for locals trying to reopen those plants post 9/11…. Notwithstanding these difficulties various smallscale producers have managed continue operating successfully despite du Pont’s closure….. Today many descendants operate those small Scale Production facilities retained within Rahway Township…" Today marked 95 years since inception date November 16th 1906 establishment date negroes working men mainly Laborers employed chiefly hand labor outfitting stores etc…No school open attending children other than born here nigger women domestic help few jobs availableoutside village center tho girls learn some house keeping skillsnearly all young girls attend high school inside village center tho boys goto college…. Manynative sons enlisted during WWII service pts served overseas….. Postwar changes brought about mostly through migration especially among African American men although women also entered workforce………………………………………..
