Berwyn, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,824 as of the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Chicago, and the tenth-largest city measured by population in IL. The metropolitan area has a population of over 100 million people. The Berwyn community began as a farming community on the banks of the Chicago River in 1871. In 1898 it became part of the City of Chicago after being annexed from Rockford Township. The original name for Berwyn was Elmhurst; this name change came about because many homes were built with Elm trees as their foundation material because that was all that could be found near where they were located. In 1924, when Rockford Township merged into Cook County, Berwyn became an incorporated town under its own board of trustees and governance system with its own police force and fire department (which continues to exist today). Prior to that date, Berwyn had been a part of Rockford Township which provided services such as education, public health and welfare, infrastructure maintenance (including streetlights), roads and parks authorities etc.. The following year saw another name change when Elmhurst Heights became home to Wilmette High School after property developers purchased land next door for use as a high school campus. This event also helped rename one of downtown's most popular streets - West Side Highway - "Eighth Street" in honor of Wilmette High School's students who made this happen! Berwyn experienced several other name changes throughout its history including: Villa Park (1929), Northbrook (1938), Midway Gardens/Midway Oaks (1950s), Glenbard South/Glenbard East (1960s) before finally settling upon its current moniker – Berwyn Village – on July 1st 1966. Today’s growth within Berwyn has come about through various initiatives such as jobs & economic development through partnerships with businesses both large & small; increased access to transportation options via bike or bus routes; increasing number of housing units available thru annexation or purchase from adjacent properties etc.; retail density thru conversion or opening up existing buildings for sale/lease etc.; cultural attractions thru events like art shows/festivals/concerts every summer etc.; while still maintaining close ties with family & friends who have contributed greatly to what makes our village so special – our citizens!
