Second, when an organism has both hands free to manipulate things either physically or cognitively, bipedality gives that individual more opportunities for learning about their environment and developing social skills – qualities that may be less pronounced in quadrupeds who must rely largely on their senses alone to survive (Fowler 2006). Finally, because bipedality requires less energy to complete physical tasks than quadrupedalism does (Fowler 2006), it may be an advantage in cold environments where larger animals may require hours of hard work just to cover several metres (Lanner 2008).

Berwyn was organized as a village on May 15, 1871, from what were then two unincorporated towns in Cook County: Birch Grove and Sharon. The first post office opened in Berwyn on July 1, 1871. The name was changed to its current spelling on November 3rd of that year. The Village of Berwyn remained an agricultural community until after World War II when it began to become an industrial center due to its location within easy commuting distance of downtown Chicago and other major metropolitan areas. This success led to the annexation of many surrounding villages throughout Cook County during the late 1960s and early 1970s; by 1990, Berwyn had grown to encompass 19 villages and 2 townships. Today's economy is dominated by three primary industries: healthcare services (primarily hospital-based care), transportation (including trucking services) and manufacturing (largely light industry). Many villagers continue their agriculture operations while others have turned to tourism as a source of income or have developed large medieval ruins or gardens as tourist attractions.
