It is the third most populous municipality in Cook County and the most populous city east of Chicago. The first settlement in what is now Berwyn was made on the current site of town on December 12, 1847 by Joshua Hargrave and other settlers from Maryland. The name “Berwyn” comes from Welsh for “broad green meadow” and suggests that this community had many open fields to grow crops. The first post office in Berwyn was established on May 5, 1849. At that time it was located just north of present-day downtown Berwyn and served only residents of rural areas within its jurisdiction. A second post office opened in 1851 on the west side of town; it remained open until 1865 when it moved to its present location across Main Street from the original courthouse. In 1860, a group of farmers led by John Suckling founded what would become Tilden Farms Dairy Company to produce eggs for local merchants and consumers. From their initial farm production until 1943 they produced more than 1 million eggs per year for local businesses and individuals throughout Cook County. The City of Berwyn was incorporated as a new village on November 14, 1909 following an act by the General Assembly which authorized cities to be formed within counties where no village had been organized previously. On January 1, 1915 incorporation transferred all water rights (including those used for irrigation) from Vail Creek Township to Berwyn pursuant to an agreement between then- Mayor Harry Laughlin and Commissioners John Jablonski and Clarence Moeschbachske with respect to water supplies for both villages – thereby ending years of drought in central Illinois caused by inadequate rains during summer months In 1945–46 when World War II began hostilities erupted over control of distribution points along Lake Michigan resulting in forced evacuations throughout much northern Illinois includingBerwyn became one of several plants located at Rockford Army Ammunition Plant helpinginoa boost production while also providing employment opportunities For locals who manned gun emplacements around plant perimeterduring war years industry increased significantly
