The town became an important munitions manufacturing center during World War II. Berwyn is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,621 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Cook County after Chicago. Berwyn is located on the north shore of the Chicago River and borders Lake Michigan to the east and west. The first people to live in what is now Berwyn came overland from Canada around 1836. By 1850, there were 1,500 residents in Berwyn. A post office was established at Berwyn in 1855, and by 1860 there were 5 stores and one hotel. In 1872, a sawmill was built south of town by Jotham Postell and converted into a grist mill which became known as Postell's Mill until it closed in 1922. In 1876–77, two men named Hiram Greenhill developed a farmstead about three-quarters mile (1 km) northeast of Berwyn on land that had previously been owned by General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry unit during the Ulysses S Grant army campaigns of 1864–1865. From their farmsteadrow house began what would become one of America's longest running grain marketing operations: Greenhill Grain Marketing Company (). Grains were brought into town for refinement before being shipped off to customers throughout Chicagoland and beyond (). A post office called "Berwyn" was established at this location on December 15, 1865; it remained in operation until its closure on July 16, 1902. One early inhabitant of Berwyn was John Pomeroy who later served as mayor from 1901 to 1904; he also founded Pomeroy Institute which still exists today (). In 1895 Arthur Latham erected an opera house (), which remains extant today as Lincoln Hall () - berwyn's first major commercial development since arriving onto Mapuche land () The opening of Northwestern Bell Telephone Company’s telephone line through downtown made possible phone service throughout much of Chicagoland (); this new development led to increased business opportunities for local farmers who could sell their products directly to telephone subscribers (). The following year saw another significant growth milestone when the city limits were expanded Westward from where they presently stand (), leading to more businesses opening up within walking distance including several grocery stores (), department stores (), movie theaters (), etc., making it easy for locals to get around without spending too much time driving orTaking public transportation (). This new area quickly became known as “The Annex” due both its rapidly growing commercial district (home unto many high-end retailers such as Sears & Roebuck) and its large number of residential properties (). Many classic buildings dating back from this era remain standing today including Hiram Greenhill House () - now used as offices - High Street Methodist Church (now First Presbyterian), Wrentham Mansion (), Town Hall () - rebuilt following fire damage caused by a lightning strike in 1916 – former home of Mayor John Pomeroy - Lenox Square Park (), Burton Block House (); these buildings are all part of Historic District #4B for Berwyn

Berwyn, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,291 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Elgin metropolitan area. The name "Berwyn" was given to the town by General John Fritchie in 1847 as part of his land grant to the then-new Township of Elgin. The first settler in what is now Berwyn was George White who arrived in 1788 and built a cabin on a hill overlooking present day Elmhurst Avenue. In 1814, Major General David Yates founded Fort Dearborn as part of an effort to challenge American Indian control over much of central Illinois. A post office called "Dearborn" served this fort until 1837 when it became "Berwyn". In 1847, General John Fritchie granted portions of what are now Cook County to five townships: Elgin, Glendale Heights, Hinsdale, Lemont and Mt Prospect. When these grants were recorded at the township level they were known as "Fritchie Townships". On February 14th, 1847 (the Feast of St Michael), Fritchie deposited with the recording clerk for Elgin Township one acre (4 acres) for every 20 families residing therein; this donation constituted about one third of today's downtown Berwyn block bounded by Elmhurst Avenue on the north side and State Street on the south side. The first school in what is now Berwyn was opened in November 1838 by Mrs Sarah Morse located at 47 Eberhardt Ave., later renamed First Presbyterian Church which served gradeschoolers through high school students until 1958 when it merged into Northwestern High School adjacent to Park Ridge Junior College which offers undergraduate degrees since 1959). In addition there were two gristmills operating during this time – one operated by Captain Samuel Ladd at 301 Wacker Drive and another by Nicholas Stricker located just east of present day North Side Road between Indiana AVENUE and Spring Grove Rd.; both mills Output averaged 1 bushel/acre during this time. On October 15th 1862 two men from Peoria traveled downstate on horseback looking for new land where they would build a sawmill; their findings led them to select lands near present day Berwnick Road northwest of current day Lombard Road where they started construction on their mill that became known as Pioneer Mill & Saw Company. This mill continued operation until 1955 when it closed due to lackadaisical management after years of losing money leaving employees without severance or retirement benefits despite being promised these benefits upon closure). Apostolic Methodist Episcopal Church also began services here back around 1850 according to records however its location cannot be confirmed since no building remains standing today aside from some foundations which may once have been a church building if not for some restoration work currently underway inside& outside the current structure (see attached map). Another religious group active here during this time period was German Evangelical Lutheran Church which worshipped here until 1903 although no evidence exists verifying its existence beyond historical record & legend; nonetheless it likely played an important role here during that time period due to its presence along with other Protestant denominations within walking distance or even minutes' drive away like Holy Cross Catholic Church located just southeast cornerPresent Day Elmhurst Blvd&Indiana AVENUE while also having easy access to goods available sold at local farmers markets throughout Chicagoland including Merrillville Farmers Market which took place just east off Interstate 80 next door.) One large manufacturing company that did call Berwyn home during this time frame was Jaffe Brothers who manufactured shoes starting out small but soon growing into one of Chicagoland's largest shoe manufacturers thanks largely to their distribution network via Uptown Chicago stores such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Jaffe Bros., Guggenheim Department Store and more beginning in 1922 before eventually shuttering operations in 1957 following many years spent struggling against stiff competition from Japanese manufacturers.)As mentioned earlier several early churches established themselves within walking distance or minutes' drive away like Holy Cross Catholic Church located just southeast cornerPresent Day Elmhurst Blvd&Indiana AVENUE while also having easy access to goods available sold at local farmers markets throughout Chicagoland including Merrillville Farmers Marketwhich took place just east off Interstate 80 next door.)
