Bensenville is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,721 at the 2010 census. Bensenville is one of the fastest-growing communities in Illinois and has experienced double-digit growth since 2000. The community is located on the north side of Chicago and bordered by Westmont to the east, Kenwood to the west, and O'Hare International Airport to the south. Bensenville was first settled in 1834 by German immigrants as part of a move from nearby Mokena. The name "Bensenville" comes from John Bensen who came overland from Germany in 1817 and acquired land on which he built a farmstead. John's son Julius also arrived in 1834, followed by his brother Wilhelm (1835-1910) and their families. By 1840 there were eleven liveable homes within what is now Bensenville Township; however, only four of these remain today. In 1845 Julius married Anna Hessenbach (born circa 1824), daughter of Johann Hessenbach (1812-1878), one of five brothers who founded Hessenbach & Co., an early Chicagograin merchant dynasty. Anna became Mrs. Julius Bensenville and they had six children: Caroline (1847-1920),John Jr.(1849-1937), Wilhelm II (baptized Wilhelm Friedrich August Hessius January 12th 1860 - died December 3rd 1944), Gustavus Adolphus Emanuel(baptized George Augustus Ludwig August Faust von Steuben November 11th 1861 - died October 25th 1945), Emma Louisa(died February 2nd 1906). The agricultural Village beginnings may have been due simply to favorable natural terrain for farming around present day Bensenville – rolling hills with large sandhills lying athwart its center – making it easily accessible for early settlers during difficult times when transportation was limited or expensive. With railroads reachingChicago starting at street level just beyond where their farms lay today back then (), farmers could bring their crops inland while still having access to markets throughout central Illinois via wagon trains transporting goods all year round! Today many First Settlers can still be found living near/on their original farmsteads through visits each Springtime! Bensenville is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 936 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bensenville was first settled in 1837 by Captain John Bensen and his family as an agricultural colony on a sugar plantation called Prairie du Chien. The settlers were from New Hampshire and Connecticut. In 1875, Captain Bensen donated 160 acres of land to the town for its incorporation as a village. The town's first store opened in 1878, and the first post office was established in 1880. One of the early businesses in Bensenville was an insurance company that catered to farmers throughout Kane County. By 1902, there were twelve stores and two feed markets in the town center alone. In 1916, Mayor Edwin Halsey organized a bingo game at the old Municipal Auditorium to raise money for local war efforts. That same year sawthe opening of what would become one of Bensenville's most iconic businesses: The George Peabody Store (now known as Peabody Chevrolet). In 1922, Village President Hiram Sibley dedicated the new library building which still stands today on Main Street near Wilson Avenue. Bensenville has experienced many changes over its history; some have been positive (such as increasing economic prosperity) while others have been more negative (such as being significantly impacted by World War II). Nevertheless, through it all, Bensenville has remained a community with strong ties to its residents and their heritage
