Bensenville, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the seat of McHenry County. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the west side of the Chicago metropolitan area and is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Combined Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Bensenville were French colonists who arrived during the 17th century and named it "Beausoleil." A post office called Beausoleil was established in 1836, and was renamed Bensenville in 1881 after Amos Bean, one of its founders. In 1860, John Cameron bought 640 acres (25 km²) east of present-day Bensenville from Abram J. Strong for $5,000; this land would become home to Cameron's Cotton Mills until deregulation led to their closure in 1984. By 1870, Beausoleil had a population of 350 people and a schoolhouse. In 1893, Daniel Prentice purchased 375 acres (14 km²), including present-day Bensenville from James Hutton for $10,000; this land would become known as Prairie View A&M University Park after Prentice donated it to that institution in 1951.) Bensenville has undergone many transformations over its history: from an agricultural center into one of Near South Side's most rapidly growing neighborhoods during prohibition; to being known primarily for its manufacturing industries during World War II; to experiencing rapid growth following decennial censuses through 1990 and 2000 before becoming less diversely populated due to annexed suburban development around it; and finally becoming more diverse again with annexations by other neighborhoods since 2000.
